2015 X5M-Installed cabin air filters and engine air filter using BMW parts from FCP Euro. Next day, after two separate 30 minute drives I can smell what appears to be an electrical burning smell from outside the vehicle. No odor inside car. No odor from interior cabin air filter or fuse box. Slight burning smell odor from one of the new cabin air filters inside engine area. No performance issues. Any thoughts on source or similar experiences?

Do you have anything read bmw codes? There's a "sniffer" sensor on passenger side outside cabin filter to check for bad incoming air. It's my understanding it runs at a high temp inside itself. If that's the source you would get a code for the sensor being bad. This is just a wild guess on my part. I don't know of any other reason for your smell. Good hunting

Thanks for your suggestion. I don't have a code reader. For some reason, no odor on shorter trips? Will see if I can get codes read.

A lot of people confuse “electrical burning smell” with the oil burning from a leaking valve cover. Might be worth a check

Thanks for sending that. I checked all filters again and the plastic smell seems to be similar to or originating from new engine air filters ? Hard to tell after a fairly short drive. Will take a look at this sensor.
