I have an 06 E90 with BMW assist as an installed option on the car but I am not subscribed to it.

In that case, when I quote for Insurance, am I eligible to get Anti-theft discount?

Can cops locate the car in the event of a theft?

On what basis would you get the discount?

but I am not subscribed to it.

Can cops locate the car in the event of a theft?
How would they do that? :dunno:

Yes. If your car is stolen, you can contact BMW and they can locate it for you. I'm 95% sure about this.

When I activate my BMW assists they send me affidavit for insurance company. Then I faxed this document to fax number provided to my by my insurance company.

Protecting your valuable investment.

If your BMW is equipped with this capability* and is ever stolen, notify the BMW Assist Response Center by calling toll free (888) 333-6118 immediately after filing your police report. The response specialist can remotely activate your BMW Assist system to locate your vehicle and then help the police recover it. This feature may even reduce your comprehensive insurance premium

Looks like I can get Anti-theft discount without subscribing to BMW assist

Geico has given us the Anti-theft discount for both our BMWs for years. And neither of them have anything other than the factory-standard passive prevention systems.

If anything, Insurance companies should give discounts for Stability Control and adaptive brake lights. Perhaps the latter is a bit of a stretch, but the former has been shown to reduce or prevent collisions.

Not the same thing. Some insurance companies give an additional discount specifically for SVR.

Jonathan, do you know of some reason BMW couldn't or wouldn't renew a subscription over the phone in such a circumstance? I feel pretty confident they'd do whatever they could to help.

If they did that, then people would not maintain the service and treat it as a "I'll subscribe if my car is stolen" service - which it isn't.

In addition, even if they could reactivate the phone number for the TCU, that's not something that could be provisioned quickly (they are very careful to disconnect non-paying non-subscribing customers quickly) and, in stolen vehicle recovery, it's key to get a fix on the vehicle's location within a short period of time.

Clearly the response specialist can only remotely activate the system if you are an active subscriber. Otherwise there's nothing for them to activate.

I have no facts to support the next sentence. I just betcha, they'd locate your car, even if you're not subscribed. If the car has the shark fin and the button, it's got the capability.

Like JSpira says, you have to be an active subscriber to have access to any of the benefits of BMW Assist. Otherwise, there wouldn't be a subscription service- everyone would just be a free-rider.

Once you don't recommit to BMW Assist, the antenna for BMW Assist is turned off. It's not like the radio antenna in the sense it is always functional. Think of it like a homing beacon: If the beacon is shut off, you cannot locate the target.

If the TCU has been provisioned off (standard procedure for lapsed subscriptions), the car may require a trip to the dealership to get BMW Assist working - something that is not easily accomplished if it already has been stolen. If the TCU was not provisioned off, the owner would have to become a subscriber - and only then would BMW Assist attempt to trace the car.

Here in TX a few years back they starting giving 3 levels of ever increasing discount, in plain english they equate to:

Passive: Coded Driveaway Protection
Active: Alarm
Tracking: BMW Assist or Lo-Jack

To get to the point, you HAVE to be subscribed to BMW Assist for them to activate SVR (Stolen vehicle recovery)!! No you cannot get the insurance discount if you are not, again, subscribed to BMW Assist. I'd say better safe than sorry and just sign up for the service. You would also get the other Safety Plan features, ACN (Automatic Collision Notification), connection to roadside, SOS button for other minor accidents or emergencies.

Don't be afraid to check out the BMW assist button even if not currently subscribed. It will connect to a BMW assist automated message, if you want to subscribe, follow the message information and a real person comes on. As far as locating your car, you must be a current subscriber. Presently I'm not subscribed but I'm thinking about subscribing if I take a road trip later in the summer.
