hey guys. I went up to SF from LA to pickup a 2000 540i6 and on the way back crossing the Bay Bridge. My car stalled at the toll plaza and then had problems getting back into gear. I"m not sure if the clutch is engaging or something? I wouldn't let me get into gear. I miraculously maded it back to my friend place in 4th gear. Anyway it sitting outside now and I don't know what to do. It won't go into first gear to drive it anywherre. I can move the shifter effortlessly when the car is off. When its on it doesn't want to go into gear? Does anyone know what is wrong. Please help. I need to make it back home to LA tomorrow. Did my transmission fail or the clutch? I just paid a lot of money for this car a few hours ago? Tomrrow is sunday and all the shops are closed. I' m so screwed. I don't know what could have happen. Maybe i can somehow cancel the deal if the problem is too expensive to fix? The cpo ended a week ago and I had it inspected? I went from cloud 9 to :( in a few short hours? So now I have a big problem. Out of a lot of money for the car and no way home.

-? CDV problem
-Likely clutch problem. ? air in hydraulic,...as a quick fix, you might want to bleed the clutch hydraulic.
Relatively easy to do, simply open the bleeder screw on the slave cylinder to be sure only brake fluid comes out and not air. Now if air is out and then fluid, then you should be OK then.

Back to L.A....my cousin is an excellent indepedent bmw mechanic for 15 yrs:

fork ball?

same thing happened to me when i had my 300ZX and i was on the NJTP going to a Z car meet at the shop. pumped the clutch and got it into gear. the forkball literally broke off when i pulled up to the shop. shifting w/synchro FTW.

good luck!

I'm going to side with Chivas and say there was a catastrophic failure somewhere. I think with air in the lines, you would have noticed degraded clutch perfromance before your issue on the bridge. It could be as simple as a blown fluid line or as bad as a release bearing, fork or slave cylinder problem. You might try and give the dealer a call (if you bought it from a dealer) and explain the situation. Otherwise, find a good indie shop and catch a bus home. Good luck.

So what am looking at in terms of cost. $100-$1000.

I really have no idea, it depends on the severity and the shop. Keep in mind that you have to pull the tranny to get to the clutch (and related hardware), so it's not going to be cheap if it's the fork/bearing/clutch plate.

Hey guys. really desperate for help cause I slowly learned that I can't trust any mechanic. Car's been in the shop for 2 weeks. I only had the car for like 1 hr after I drove it.

Anyway I towed to a small shop I was and found on google maps. This is European shop that google said does BMW&MINi service. but does any kind of european.

This shop states I need a new clutch and probably should get the master/slave cylinders replaced as well. I state that its probably just the slave based on answers from the board here. he says it won't work and need new clutch. so i give in and let him do the clutch too. then after he opens it up says I need a flywheel. Now i'm lookin at $1500 in repairs and another $1000 if he does the flywheel. Anyway i say no flywheel because everyone says that is not related to my issue. Anyway he does the job install new clutch and slave. no master or flywheel. I get the car back and it has no pressure on clutch pedal. feel like paper. Also car reving high before I can switch gears???.

I then proceed to drive the one mile to the nearest BMW specialist. they try everything bleed the clutch pressure system and install new master cylinder. nothing works. they thinks the clutch install was F**ked. Now they suggest to remove the tranny and take a look at what the first shop did.

My question is. Does the symptoms I have sound like a bad clutch install or are there anything else I can look at or replace before I pay the big money to remove the tranny again??? Any help would be great. i've probably spent over $2500 at this point for what could have been a $300 job. I don't want to bring it back to the first shop since they were totally shady and i found out their license is expired. What could it be bad pressure plate, backwards clutch disk, fork, pivot/lever, bad slave install??? improper bleeding???

My two concerns/issues are
-low to no pressure on the pedal.
-car seemed like it had no power and needed to be revved hghet than normal before I could shift gears.

Why did they tell you that you required a flywheel? Heat cracked? Scored? Could it be machined?
If the disc was in backwards the clutch would not engage at all.
If the pilot brg is siezed the trans will not disengage, as the imput shaft keeps turning. Did they replace the pilot brg? Did they give you the old parts back?
Get the BMW shop to pull the trans again, ensure the install was correct. If not take pictures, talk to the first shop and try to get your money back, or write it off as a learning experience.

If i was you, bring it to BMW let them take the tranny out and see if they first shop screwed up on the install and if they did have bmw take some pictures and then file complaint with the Attorney generals office about the first shop and hopefully you will get your money back with some help.

The first shop was saying something like the flywheels was overheated and had too much movement. I doubt I need a flywheel because the car was driving fine except I couldn't put into gear. I took some pics and felt the flywheel surface. no rough areas, cracks, etc.. the were some grey, black spots but the other mechanic said that this is normal. Anyway first shop put in new clutch kit-disc, pressure plate, throwout bearing.

Alright check this out I know what's wrong. You're car came with a Self Adjusting Clutch. What this means is that the pressure plate has all the springs and comes loaded with a tool on the front of it. This also means that in order to align the clutch on the flywheel you CANNOT use a standard clutch alignment tool. You need a special one that aligns the clutch with this spring loaded tool still on the pressure plate so that you can tighten down the pressure plate WHILE aligning the clutch. Then you just take of the tool that was holding the self adjusting pressure plate assembly locked, it springs into action and will adjust itself accordingly for the life of you're clutch.

Now what does this mean to you. Well my guess would be that they didn't know how the SAC mechanism works and in order for the mechanic shop to use their UNIVERSAL clutch alignment tool they had to first release the pressure plate to use it. Meaning you just lost the SAC for you're clutch and from what you are saying, it prolly means that you're clutch is slipping ALOT if you're lossing power.

Please god tell me you paid at the other shop with CC. Go back to the shop and ask to speak to the mechanic; ask to see the clutch alignment tool he used for the car. I'm going to upload a picture of what it would look like, and if he didn't use it.......well then cancel the payment via credit card if he doesn't refund you for the crap job he preformed.

Nope sorry the shop was shady and forced me to pay cash since I was from out of town. They wouldn't let me take the car until i paid. the clutch kit I believe is suppose to come w/ the alignment tool at least it does from the dealer. Not sure where he got the kit. so u think it wasn't aligned right. what about replacing the release bearing, pivot pin, or fork lever.
