I find it annoying that when I turn the steering wheel at low speed, the engine rpm drops so low and the engine shakes/drones. Does 335's hydraulic power steering draw that much power? This is the first car I have such issue.

If you are turning the wheel to full lock, that's normal -often along with some noise. If not, then perhaps a visit to your dealer is in order.

Also, have you checked your power steering fluid level?

My new 535i is my first AT BMW - I had 2 previous MT 3 series. My transmission in regular D mode is programmed to allow very low rpm levels. When driving slowly it drops to almost 1000 rpm. I'm guessing your 335i may be similar. This may be "normal" -- I've kind of gotten used to it. DS mode avoids this by keeping the revs higher in each gear.
