Hi guys
I have a 2008 X3 M Sport 2.0D. I recently took the car on a long run (approx. 8hrs) and got the "terrible triad" of lights (ABS, 4x4, and Brake).

When I connected and scanned using DIS V57 I got the following:

DSC - 5F3A DSC: Transfer case: Malfunction
DSC - 5F39 DSC: Transfer case: Internal
AWD control B3450_8P_VTG
DSC Supply B3450_E60VERS

MRS5K - A1 MRS: No message from DSC control unit or message incorrect
MRS5K - A3 MRS: No message from DSC control unit or message incorrect
Airbag supply B6510_30018

IHKA - 20 IHKA: AUC heating - - - - Short circuit to negative
AUC sensor B6450_00107

VTG - 54C6 VTG: Oil wear - value too high
Transmission oil B2710_VGOEL

DDE - 40A4 DDE: Exhaust-gas recirculation controller, position, long-term drift
Exhaust-gas recirculation controller B1365_D7AGR

DDE - 4B1C DDE: Fuel-filter heating, activation - open circuit
Fuel-filter heating B1365_D7KSH

DDE - 4A6E DDE: Glow plug, cylinder 1, activation - open circuit
Heating control B1365_D7GSG

LEW - 04LWS: Slider fault (adjustment operations )
Slider fault (adjustment operations ) B3714_00004

VTG - 54C4 VTG: Calibration faulty - mechanical fault
mechanism B2710_VGMECH
Repair B2710_VGREP

DSC - 6E3E DSC: Steering-angle -sensor adjustment required
steering - angle signal B3450_8PE83LEWI_NEU
Adjustment, steering_angle sensor B3450_E83ABGL

Do I need to replace the transfer case actuator gear or transmission fluid. also, do I need to replace the steering angle sensors.
What about the other errors ?

Any help will be appreciated

How many miles?
Do you have a clicking sound from underneath? I would start checking/replacing/rotating the gear in the actuator, then reset the codes and go from there, see here:
http://www.bimmerfest.com/forums/showthread.php?t=566880

It looks like you have other codes unrelated to the terrible triad.
It also looks like the steering angle sensor needs calibration, but check the mechanical side first, then see if the what codes come back.

It has a little over 115,000 miles.

I don't hear the clicking sound, but still thinking it is related to the actuator gear. I will look into ordering 1 and changing it.
Found this online:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...roduct/B00H2TD5IQ?psc=1&redirect=true&ref_=ox_sc_act_title_5&smid=ATVPDKIKX0DER

I had the triad about 1 year ago and took it to a mechanic (there's no dealers in Guyana, just mechanics) and he wanted to change the actuator, but the lights came off, so I didn't bother with it then, but now its back and the car has issues since.
Whenever I lock the steering all the way to the left to make a turn at a stop, there is a "knocking" sound from the left side as I start to accelerate. Also, sometimes when accelerating from a stop, you can feel a jerking motion (forward and backwards)

Finally had some time to work around the problems. one by one.

First thing done was to change the transfer case actuator gear as well as the transfer case fluid. The gear looked pretty messed up. This took care of the Transfer case as well as the VTG errors listed above.

Next I recalibrated the steering angle sensor. The error lights and codes would disappear for a moment, but as soon as the steering wheel is turned, they all come back. I tried multiple times, but the same happens each time. Now I removed the steering angle sensor and tried to clean it as I read this sometimes might be the case. The sensor seems fine externally. Reinstalled back, attempted to recalibrate and the same issue occurs:
-MRS5K - A1 MRS: No message from DSC control unit or message incorrect
Airbag supply B6510_30018
-LEW - 04LWS: Slider fault (adjustment operations )
Slider fault (adjustment operations ) B3714_00004
-DSC - 6E3E DSC: Steering-angle -sensor adjustment required
steering - angle signal B3450_8PE83LEWI_NEU

Trying to work around the errors in DIS, I'm getting the following:
"90 degrees difference of wiper too large"

Should I replace the steering angle sensor or is it possible that the error is coming from another issue. Also, if I go the route of replacing the sensor, would it need to be coded (and if so, can it be done with DIS) or just recalibrated?

Thanks in advance :)

90 degrees out. Had to deal with it when I had my old E39. Pretty sure the x3 uses the same steering angle sensor. Check this thread:

If you open the sterring angle sensor, one of the wipers on the carbon ring is gone. You can either replace the whole unit or get the wiper from a scrap unit.

correct DIS procedure ????

got the wheels straight ahead .....got the battery charged up and looking for 100% charge at ~12.6 volts .....got a battery charger hooked up or a power supply when you do DIS ????

good generic of steps in bmw steering angle sensor calibration ....also ....be positive you have the correct battery level and charger/power supply hooked up

view, study and inwardly digest for the DIS power supply in section 4

about 3 mins in .....section 4 he covers the simple power supply hook up when doing stuff in DIS, PROGMAN etc

a battery charger is the minimum you want hooked up when coding, programming .....yaggotta have the correct volts at the battery too....we are shooting for the 12.6 volts fully charged 100% level

generic steps to code, program, read and clear codes etc

Thanks for the replies guy.

A lot of issues are caused by a failing battery
correct DIS procedure ????
The battery is was not too long replaced and I'm pretty much doing the DIS procedure as shown in the video.

90 degrees out. Had to deal with it when I had my old E39. Pretty sure the x3 uses the same steering angle sensor.
It is the same sensor used in the E39. I've decided to replace the steering angle sensor, already ordered one and will dealing with it shortly.

Finally had time this week to tackle the steering angle sensor.

Was able to install and code the new sensor. By doing this I managed to clear the airbag and steering angle sensor errors. I also got rid of the triad of lights on my dash.

So far so good, will keep you guys posted as to how everything goes.

Good to hear!

After a few months of trouble free driving, I'm back to seek help.

Monday whilst driving to work the 4x4 light came on and it became difficult to make turns ... it was as if the wheels were locking up and shuddering when turned to either the left or the right.

Took it to the my local mechanic yesterday, got it scanned and it came back as Rear left wheel speed sensor - Air gap.

Drove home from the mechanic last evening, came out to open my gate, went to go drive in the garage only to find my doors locked ... with the keys in the ignition and the engine running. Somehow the door locks malfunction and locked the vehicle.
Basically had to break into my own vehicle last night. ( It was surprisingly very easy ... Took about 15 mins using a slim jim and a wire hook to unlock the driver door)
When I got in ... the dashboard was lit up. The ABS, Brake, Airbag and tire pressure lights as well as the 4x4 lights were on.
Rescanned it and there were no new errors ... Just the wheel speed sensor Air gap

Any thoughts?
