Well, I am fully packed and ready to take off to Munich for my European Delivery of my new 650i Convertible. Fly out on Tuesday, land Wednesday, recover Thursday and Delivery is Friday.

I order every option that I could fit into the configuration I wanted, so this baby has:

The BMW Individual Composition Package with Tanzanite Blue Metallic paint, Amaro Brown Full Merino Leather, Dark Red Sycamore Wood trim, 20" BMW Individual light alloy wheels and the Shadowline exterior trim.

Then the option packages included the Drive Assistance Package (Lane Departure Warning, Active Blind Spot Detection, Side and Top View Cameras, Parking Assistant and the Head-up Display). With the 20" Wheels, configured the full LED lights of course. Then added Ceramic Controls, the Luxury Seating Package (Front ventilated seats, Active front seats, Premium Sound Package and yep the Bang & Olufsen and everything IPad/IPhone, BMW Apps).

Included the Active Roll Stabilization (ARS), Adaptive Drive, Active Cruise Control, Heated front seats, Automatic high beams and even Night Vision with Pedestrian Detection.

Last May I turned in my MB S63, and have been driving a 2002 Porsche 911 Cab. While the Porsche is fun, I am too old for that go-cart and am very much looking forward to a much more refined mode of transportation. I know most of you are "M" fans, but I had the great exhaust noise with the S63, now I wanted the great Leather and paint job! This is my fourth BMW, the others were 7's, but the last one nine years ago, was the start of the Idrive and the build quality of the car was not so good.

It was interesting finding a CA that understood how to configure this order and I learned a lot in the process. The details of that trial will be described in the next entry. But this is what I learned over the months:
1) Most dealers have no idea what an Individual Configuration is, and I could not find a single dealer that had a swatch / plate with either the Paint or the Leather or the wood that was available. One just has to guess what it may look like from the pictures on the internet. I have purchased a car, and have only a rough idea what it is going to look like!
2) With an Individual Configuration there are things you CANNOT order, no matter if you have check in hand. Including you could not order the "Cold Weather Package", so no heated steering wheel, although it now looks like the rules may have changed
3) You don't order "Contrast stitching" with the Individual, it just comes that way.
4) With an Individual Configuration and Tanzanite Blue (also a color on the M6) you CANNOT order an Xdrive, or with the Xdrive you cannot have Tanzanite Blue, I guess it is too individual.
5) My first CA spent two months trying to get the Leather dash with my Individual Configuration, but it turns out it is already included. Must be why they call it Full Merino Leather.
6) Using a normal "White" IPhone cable will work, but to get full functionality you really want to use an "epsilon cable", which has both the USB and the small round connector, they both go into the car via the center glove compartment.
7) With the ED, you don't pay the extra add in charge for the "Shared Dealer Marketing charge".
8) My first CA said I needed four months to arrange a Europe Delivery, but my second CA was able to set it up in under 45 days, but she is a pro!
9) After Manufacture (code 150) the car goes into "Workshop" where they add in all the Individual goodies. It adds another week of effort to the process, must be part of the $7,000 charge.

I completed my transaction using Judy Ray, at Crevier BMW in Santa Ana, California. Dealing with me was a handful as I was spitting mad after dealing for three months with a CA from the Inland Empire who truly did not know what he was doing. She was a true Pro, know's her stuff and knows folks both in the states and Germany who could get answers. And the deal in the end was over $100 a month cheaper on the lease. More on that experience later.

How not to buy a BMW

I am in the consulting business. Everyday I receive requests from prospective clients to provide a bid for services requested. So getting ready to get a 650i convertible, I did a ton of research and took some test drives. I found out there are ***8220;opportunities***8221; out there to trick your ride if you know what to order, but you have to know what to ask. Then I went out to the USAA web site, picked out the options and printed off what the retail and invoice costs would be according to that site.

I sent out this request and in a week the best quote came from an internet salesman at a dealer in the inland empire. I came in after thanksgiving, created a quote on his system and dropped off a $2,500 dollar deposit on my brand new 650i.

In January I next heard from him that I was at a ***8220;Point of no Return***8221; and had to finalize the color, so I did that. Then when I tried to finalize the production date, I found out that the order was completely wrong and his system produced a quote that BMW would not build and the car never made it into the BMW system, just the dealers. He reconfigures the bid, reduces about $7.000 worth of options, and reduces the price by maybe $3,000. Strange where did the other $4,000 go, maybe more profit? So I start to smell a rat and start asking more questions. After he told me that the Xdrive car did not allow the ***8220;cold weather package***8221;, then told me the xdrive car did not have head light washers, I started to realize he was making stuff up. And I was told I could not switch to ED in under four months. We went elsewhere to talk to a CA that understood how to order a new 650i and had done it before.

That***8217;s when the real fun started, I lost all the special offers that were available in December, but when I started fresh, the money factor was WAY better, and the residual was higher, so the monthly lease cost went down by almost $200.00 for the exact same car, without all the discounts. But the inland empire guy said that even though my order was at 120, which I knew meant I could change or cancel the car he said ***8220;We expect you to take delivery of this car***8221;.

Well, in the internet world, we found contacts at the West Coast BMW management in Oxnard, and some folks in Jersey all of which we were ***8220;Not allowed to talk to***8221;, and we had them cancel the first order so we could move forward. We had to do all this by ourselves, as it was not something ***8220;another dealer***8221; could jump in and help with. This whole thing was days away from by going to another brand of car, but I do like the F12!

And now, all is well in the end. I am picking up my new car this week, American Express retrieved my deposit, as the inland empire dealer would not let it go on their own and I have established a great relationship with Crevier BMW. Let the fun begin!

Can't wait to see your car and hear about ED. Sounds like a pretty horrible process, but the car is definitely worth fighting for. I'd love to hear your thoughts about those options most of us passed up, like Individual, Night Vision, and Active Cruise Control. Have a great trip!

Why did you decide to lease vs. purchase the car? I'm thinking about purchasing a 640i Gran Coupe but with only the premium sound, luxury seating, ceramic controls, heated front seats, and BMW Apps to keep the cost down.

Am I missing something regarding leasing. Is the lease at like a negative interest rate or do you get a super special price on the car? Doesn't make sense that with discounts eliminated that your price comes out less. Does this mean they are trying to discourage purchases and push leasing instead?

Your car sounds like a sweet configuration.

It's good you have finally found a good CA, but I would suggest for any future ED buyers to consider doing some research in the Fest's ED forum and utilizing some of Fest's Sponsors who are ED specialist that offer great pricing ($500-$1,200 over ED invoice less incentives) and are incredibly knowledable in the ED ordering process.

Great choice of colors both interior and exterior colors. Those would have been my choices if I hadn't been going from a Blue 2010 650i. I wanted another bright but different color so I chose Vermillion Red. Being in a small market I found my best deal and delivery support has been to nurture support from the local dealer and in particular a salesman that has been in the business for a long time. You are very fortunate to have a number of choices. I'm glad you found a guy who is good. I hope you have a good trip and the wait to take possession is not to long. I know it will be around a month for delivery. Its a small world until you have to physically ship something almost halfway around the world.

When you own your own company and it makes money, the lease payments for a company car are pre-tax. So it is like getting a 50% discount.
This is why I lease.

I own my own company too, don't you have to leave the vehicle at the office? Unfortunately I don't have a garage at the office.

If your office is in your home, that makes it easy. Or you can just keep track of the mileage from home to work and reimburse the company or take it (the cost of personal use) as income.

Or you could just take your chances and hope that you don't get audited. I had a company car for about 15 years when I owned my own business; wrote off everything, never had an audit. But I had multiple cars then too, so I used one of the other cars for all personal mileage. :D

I second the thought of using a board sponsor for a complex ED order like this. Jon or Greg would have been able to answer all your questions and square something like this away in one afternoon.

Going laptop free this trip.

You should be able to use the iPhone app on the iPad and upload pictures the same way you do from the Camera Roll/Albums on the iPhone.

Have fun!

Here is the interior. This is exactly what color and style I was looking for. A leather that was more of a saddle brown with some offset white piping.

Looks really sharp in person.

The exterior needs sunlight, but there is no such thing here in Munich!
