Exhaust for E46: Best option for GAINS?

1850 Views 9 Replies 6 Participants Last post by  JoeZ
I know that exhausts won't give you much in the way of power - but I want the most I can get. I'm sick of the absolute SILENCE that I get from the stock exhaust. I want something that is noticiable, but not annoying - definately don't want annoying droning on the highway.

My priorities are (in order):

- Reliability/Established Reputation
- Customer Service
- Performance
- Sound
- Look
- Price

Any suggestions? Is a cat-back exhaust any better than a non-cat-back? Looking for specific brand recommendations.

Thanks
-Nick

He also had the center resonator taken out, which I think does the most if you want more noise, even with a stock muffler. I like the sound of the engine far more than any exhaust, so I like its relative silence.
Aye! Forget about Eisenhaus. Operated out of a bedroom of a webmaster. That guy doesn't even stock any of the products. Eisenhaus still gets the stock from Bekkers. So Bekkers.com still the place to go to.

Here's my Eisenmann review:

Also, James Italia installed his Eisenmann last week or so. He loves it on the 330i too. ;)

Oh in any case, get UUC TSE. One of the best designs out there.

I'd stay away from Bekkers. I have an Eisenmann HP in my Z3 and almost bought through Bekkers. Bekkers only stocks the Sport Performance exhausts which are the lowest level. In addition when i told them what I was looking for they tried to talk me out of the higher performance models and the larger tips saying that I would need modifications for them.

I went with the middle performance exhaust with the larger sized tips. The tips fit fine and actually could have been quite a bit larger and still fit. However I was a little overwhelmed with the low RPM boom/roar. I contacted Eisenmann about possibly downgrading to the Sport and found out that the low end on all 3 models is the same and it is the top end grunt which differs. Also I found out that my 4cyl Z3 is much louder than the 6 and 8cyl cars that Eisenmann makes mufflers for. If you go to www.eisenhaust.com and listen to all the E36 and E46 M3's with Race performance exhausts, mine is much louder.

Hope this helps. If you know what you want I'd stay away from Bekkers, they just want to move their inventory.

Why does Bekkers stick to Sports only? That's because Performance and Race versions MAY not be legal in terms of noise pollution.

I totally hate Eisenhaus and find no reasons why one should order from Eisenhaus. Firstly, Eisenhaus is not the sole distributor thought the website said that it is the global distributor. Secondly, Eisenhaus is run by a website designer not a performance parts dealer. Thirdly, Eisenhaus still gets its stock from Bekkers.

And yes, John Lutrell at Bekkers can order the race and performance versions if you want.

I haven't heard about any noise polution issues with Eisenmann HP or Race versions. Also Bekkers pretty much only carries one tip size for each of their exhausts. When I asked about larger 70mm tips they said they would be huge and I'd have to cut the valance. Now that I have 70mm tips I'd say that I could have gone closer to 80mm each and still had plenty of room on each side. So unless you want the small tips and Sport model, Bekkers is going to have to order just like Eisenhaus. When I was quoted a price by Bekkers for the HP version with larger tips they wanted $70 more than Eisenhaus! No thank you, if I'm going to have to wait no matter who I order from I'm going to go with the least expensive.
