On the expansion tank, from what I read, the thermostat for A/T models often breaks when the tank is pulled out.
If you are careful and luck out, it can be re-used, but it's one of those things that can hold the job up if you need one and don't have it on hand.
It controls flow through the A/T cooler which is located nearby. Don't think they wear out, just fragile.
Might be a non-returnable item, so difficult to call.
i had just replaced my thermostat a couple months ago after it had failed. i replaced the expansion tank while i was at it and a couple of the hoses.
Kevin, most of the clamps are reusable. at least i reused all of mine. You should replace your A/T thermostat (Part #11 in the first diagram) since you'll be replacing your expansion tank.
i also recommend you replace your bleeder screw to the brass ones if you haven't already.
I would search changing the cooling system in the e46 forum. There are a ton of DIY pages and the m54 engine is exactly the same. So a 2004-2006 x3 has an identical cooling system as the 330i of those years.

yep i know
i had 2 e46's before the X3 and i'm pretty familiar with the M46 engine.
unless you were talking to OP, then yes i agree. search the e46 forums. check the DIY section of e46fanatics.com too.
Oops, my mistake. That was for the OP and I accidentally quoted your post for some reason. Sorry.
I have the same problem on my 2008 X3 Mtec 41k miles.
What do you think is a reasonable quote for a Water pump , tstat, expansion tank replacement job at BMW in NYC. :dunno:
I'm out of warrantee and being quoted 1.6k+
