This may be too sensitive a topic so I apologize if I***8217;m violating any norms, but how far in advance does a dealership order units for its floor plan? And how much flexibility do they have to change an order after submitting it?

So "floor planning," or "flooring," usually refers to the lending arrangement between the manufacturer/distributor and the individual dealers, through which dealer inventory is financed by the manufacturer or distributor. Generally, when dealers talk about their flooring, they're talking about the overhead expense of financing inventory. Holdback (AVP in BMW-speak) is, in part, designed to compensate dealers for this expense, among other things.

Each month dealers are allocated build slots through which they order/build cars for stock inventory as well as using some of these slots for Priority 1 custom builds for "sold" units destined for specific customers.

Different models have different production allocations, with some models being difficult to obtain for inventory, while other high volume models are often highly incentivised to encourage dealers to use their monthly allocated slots to order these cars.

Also, End of Production influences ordering. In most instances July is the changeover month, though some model updates occur throughout the calendar year, with the next model year cars starting production and distribution well before July, or sometimes after.

Thanks for educating me, '68. I assumed dealers placed orders periodically through the year, but I didn't expect it to be that frequent. I was expecting quarterly so the manufacturer would bear less financial risk, but should have considered how flexible supply chains are.

There was a student at my college who looked like Norm. Every time he'd come into the student dining hall, everybody (100+ people) would yell "Norm!."

The true answer, "It Depends".. :)

In general we order in August for September production for example. Usually we have a few weeks to tinker with/alter the specifications before it goes "firm" (no longer modifiable).
