For those wondering about the rumored Nav V18.1

Spoke with Chad, who spoke with his inside man at Thompson BMW. Here's the information he has on it...

The version that 2002+ navigation systems have, and the version that upgraded 2001 Mark III navigation systems have is 18.1.

18.2 is available, but is only for the new E65 7 series. I'm assuming it has some special ties to the I-Drive system, and is why it has a special version.

18.3 is not out. Apparently there is some sort of update for 18.1 in the works, which is supposed to correct bugs. No word on new features. No word on when it will be released, or what it will be called when it is released (could be 18.3, could be 19.1, etc.)

Best advice is to keep checking in with your service department. Oh, and before everyone emails me, I don't have 18.3. I am, however, contemplating upgrading my navigation system to the 2002 spec nav, as soon as I get more info, and find out if BMW will or will not offer a nav/cd combo in 2003.

So the only version out there of the split screen software right now (for non E65 cars) is 18.1?
To the best of my knowledge, this is correct.
I think you will see a nav with MD very soon! :)
I hope BMW does what Lexus does in the new ES, with CD and tape behind the screen! :thumb:
Alee, do you have a part # for the current 16x9 NAV head unit in the cars by any chance?

Thanks,

Are you thinking of doing the 16x9 upgrade, or do you already have it?

In the diagram (link above)... what is part #3? It looks like a Minidisc or some other kind of media besides cassette. Is this a possible factory order anywhere? What is the part #?

Minidisc. Not available in the US.

I assume it is only available in Europe? I wonder if I can special order that from Canada. Anyone know the part number? I'll look into it.

(My car is slated for March production with Nav and can still be modified.)
