What is the actual level when the car cuts off and the gauge shows 1/2? How much fuel is required to fill from there to full? An actually empty tank will starve the engine for fuel and it will shut off. There is no system that I know of to shut off the engine at 1/2 indicated.

So the question is, why does your engine shut off when there is fuel remaining?

Some BMW***8217;s have a split tank with a transfer pump. If the transfer pump fails then the lift pump side goes empty with fuel remaining in the other side. Perhaps your transfer pump (sometimes an eductor jet pump) has failed.

I want to remember that this was a problem with earlier models? But I can't remember any details of it.
If you go into the secret menu in the dash you can check exact fuel levels.

I'll check into that because I replaced the fuel pump thinking that was the problem but it still persists
