yes, as in the integra type R and the new mini.

they're relatively easy to rotate and whip around for track running.

the CL-S has a rather long wheelbase, so it's not a true extrapolation. it will understeer and the front diff. won't help that much here as it would exacerbate the understeer.

coming from a saab 9-5 wagon, there's no way me or my wife are EVER going back to FWD. NEVER. mix high power and FWD and it's just aggravating.

all wheel drive has been a revelation for her; okay for me.

cheers,
coky

ps. love the idea that the CL-S gets a 5 speed. hello? BMW? give us that extra cog!!!!!

sorry, this was meant as a reply to alex's post about japanese cars.
The 2003 Acura 3.2CL Type-S has LSD, which helps avoiding understeer... Also, it's got a 6-speed tranny... But I guess that's what you meant by: "...hello? BMW? give us that extra cog!!!!!"

If you have ever driven a VW GTI, you will realize that a short wheelbase and FWD can be pretty fun. You can scream around corners (as long as the inside wheel doesn't start spinning - or on the Golf, inside rear wheel doesn't LIFT OFF THE GROUND).

As a car gets larger, the FWD becomes a hinderance.

hm.

1. it's not clear to me that an LSD will decrease understeer; my gut feeling says that it's there more to tame torque steer and to help with launches from low speeds to get the power to the ground. it's probably based on the prelude ATTS, which is fine. just doesn't help with understeer in that case (when i drove it).

2. yeah, a 6th speed would surely be nice for non M E46 cars. i'm a fan of 1:1 direct 5th gear, but it would still be nice to have a 6th gear.

I drove an A3 1.8T (IMO, a Golf with an Audi badge and interior) in Germany a couple years ago and the car is a blast to drive...

However, according to C/D (if I remember right), the GTI is now too soft... That's pretty much why they ranked it third in a comparo against Focus SVT and Civic SI... Anyway, give me the GTI... :D

When I was younger, I had late-80's GTI. It had about 110 hp, and was a blast to drive. These days, that car would be considered grossly underpowered, but at the time, 0-60 in 9.0 was considered quick.

I agree today's GTI is getting a bit soft.

My friend had a 1984 GTI - man, that car was a blast to drive. Tight handling, incredibly fun on twisty mountain roads. The GTI's acceleration and cornering was measurably better than the car I had at the time - a 1982 VW Rabbit with a 4 speed manual. We considered the GTI to be a true "pocket rocket" back then - I'm sure it would be a slow car now, measured against modern cars.

It does. Well, at least I truly believe it does. Think about it... The wheels are not going to spin when weight gets transferred to the rear, which helps avoiding understeer... Anyway, I may be wrong...

It's not that slow... If I remember right, the 1.8T (180HP) goes from 0 to 60Mph in 6.3s... It kicks 325 a$$... Now, in the twisties... :thumb: But then again, if you don't have SP... :dunno:

test to find the answer: let's drive a TL-S

one of us has to drive the new 6speed CL-S or TL-S.

then report back.

i'm betting between the suspension tuning, long wheelbase, and diff: it will push like a pig on ice, to use a phrase that still makes me laugh out loud.

'easiest way to find out.

cheers,

I was referring to my friend's 1984 GTI. I'm sure the current GTI with 180 hp is very quick.

Sorry Dan, I clearly didn't read your post... That's what happens when I check out the board when I should've been working... Read posts quickly and reply with nonsense... :D

I had a black 83 with red interior!! Tanin anyone!! JK :D

That car was one of my favorites ever. I have waited for VW to bring back driving excitement like that to the gulf, but it just never seems to happen. It now has plenty of go, but still does not handle like my 83!!

VW NA, bring the anniversary Golf to the states. Now that is the sweet car a GTI should be!! :thumb:

Yup, that one is sweet. I don't think they would call it 25th anniversary Golf here in the States though. The car hasn't been around for that long here... :p

My friend's GTI was also Black with a red interior. As I remember, it was a very attractive color combo - looked very sporty. I think the exterior had some red trim accents as well.
