I have a 01 BMW X5, runs great. No problems until I backed out of my garage the other day and then the thing wouldn't go forward or reverse. It shifts into gears but no movement. When I put it in park I hear grinding until the engine slows down then engages park. It still shifts through all gears smoothly. No problem with the linkage or the shifter. I check the tranny fluid and it was still full. Is this a gearbox or transfer case issue? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Respectfully,
Thomas

Can't tell for certain, but it sounds like the splines on your front driveshaft are stripped. If true, you need to replace the front driveshaft. It's also possible you have a pblm with your rear driveshaft.

Check this out:

This sounds like low tranny fluid. Even though it looks full when you open the "add" bolt; you have to let the car run with your foot on the brake and cycle back and forth thru the gears (P-R-N-D-N-R-P) 3 or four times (holding each position for 3-4 seconds). This will spin up the torque converter, and allow you to put a lot more fluid in. Repeat this process until fluid comes back out of fill hole after recycling gears (only then is it full).

Good luck,

mannn...I'm going thru the same thing with a 2004 330ci. I just swapped the transmission with lower mileage one. Still nothing...wheels won't move. Torque converter is spinning. Fluids good. I'm gonna see if my drive shaft is spinning while it's in drive today.. gotta a lower a heat shield and look while its up on jackstands. It shifts gears and the idle changes like it's supposed to but nothing to the wheels. I'm beginning to think it's the rear differential completely. If so, I'm swapping a limited slip differential into it. I'll keep you posted. I'm flying blind and I'd like to help people if I can
