V1, without a doubt. Unless it needs to be *really* stealth. But you give up some range and effectiveness for stealth -- the best place to have radar detector sensors situated to optimize range and effectiveness is high in the windshield.

If it has to be *really* stealth, you can get the V1 concealed display for $35. I've been very happy with it.

That's the set-up I use in VA.

Just a note about false LASER warnings: If my V1 is in view of my NAV screen, it will set off a false LASER warning.

But where do you mount the main unit? If it's still high on the windshield, even without LEDs blazing, it's still not *really* stealth, is it?

SR-1 officially lists for $1100 installed. But I picked mine up for $400 and installed it myself.
I was wondering how you got to install it yourself, I guess u found it on eBay or something huh... sweet deal! I think Escort only sells to "authorized installers", i think they claim that if not installed properly it's useless, but with a bubble level i think most of us can handle the install.

I did get mine on eBay (new, in box). But I found it off eBay in mutilple places for like $550.

EDIT- A quick eBay search turned up THIS- http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=800606912 and THIS- http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=1393132084

I got V1 based on reviews (wish I did it week earlier!). It actually is much smaller than it appears to be on pictures. I'll be installing it this weekend. The unit is very solidly build, not some plastic cheap thing. I don't think I'll be going over the limit any time soon - can't afford it now - but will definitely see how it works.

dunno about you, but if i get a ticket the increase of insurance for the next 3 years will more than pay for even the SRX custom installed at an authorized dealer. (that's like around $1700??). I got a V1, hardwired, very happy with it.

I've got two Passport 8500's.

I had both a V1 and the 8500 and ended up returning the V1 to buy the second 8500.

Emission,

YOu are in a good position to tell us why you choose passport over the V1. What did you like and dislike about both? Why did you return the V1?

they are both really good detectors:

8500:
easier to use
has auto-mute
some say it looks better
smaller than older generation V1's
fewer false alarms than V1
slightly less expensive

V1:
detects better, way better range, but at the same time more false alarm

they both have great return policy and great resale value on eBay, so wouldn't hurt to just get both and return the one you like less. And let us know which you end up keeping and why. =)
