Got an M550i about 3 weeks ago. Is there a way to turn off this auto start/stop?

On my 2015 535i, you were allowed to turn off auto shut off when stopped at a traffic light but it seems like there's no way to permanently turn if off this time. You have to toggle it off EACH AND EVERYTIME you get in the car. It's really irritating that the car keeps turning off when i come to a complete stop. I feel like it ruins the engine. Not sure why BMW doesn't let us turn if off for good.

Assuming you have a '19 G30, the auto start/stop "off" button is just below the engine start button. It WILL NOT remember after you turn off the car. You need to press that button each time you start up to disable auto start/stop. When the small LED is lit on the button, the feature is disabled. (Did your dealer not tell you anything about the car operations, and/or, you have not looked at the manual??) BTW, choosing "Sport Mode" via the console button also disables the auto start/stop, while the car is in that mode. Still, pushing the button below the Engine start/stop is the sure way to always disable the feature. If you venture to try and use "Eco mode", this will ENABLE auto start/stop and you will have to press that button again.

Lots of discussion about this. It's probably completely irrelevant but my 2017 540ix remembers the last setting so it's always off and I never have to touch it. There's no iDrive setting for this and my car has never been coded. Also, it has changed since getting the car. At first it stayed on, like yours, and didn't remember the last setting but after turning it off every time I got in the car for a few weeks, it did. BMW is no help with this and can't explain it. It just is what it is.

Probably the easiest fix, is to just flop your gear shifter to the left into sport mode. That's what I do. It's kind of second nature now and I don't even think about it.

If you don't want to do any coding then this is easiest for you. I always drive in Sport Mode so the first thing I do after starting is put it in sport and that turns off the aptly-named ASS (actually with the BMW you can press the sport button before you start it as long as you have the key with you, a nice feature my other cars don't have). If you don't like the way Sport mode drives, you can configure Sport Individual for "Comfort" settings. Even though I almost always drive in Sport mode, I did acquire the Bimmercode app Full Version and a Bluetooth OBD II adapter and coded the ASS to show the last mode used. That is, if the ASS was off when you stopped the car, it will be off when you next start it. --Bob

bimmercode can be used to remember your last setting, which for me is always comfort and because the auto start/stop was off, it remembers that. but again, if you go into ECO mode, start/stop kicks back on, bimmercode doesn't do away with that feature.

I was able to reprogram my F10 with the carly app. Simple and easy, just changed the default from always on to always off. If you'd like to personalize your car and believe me there are tons of things you can change, one of the reprogramming apps is the way to go. Especially if your dealership is a bunch of d*cks like mine.

I have the F10 550i, to avoid having to push the "auto start/stop" every time I start the engine, I selected "comfort" mode as my permanent setting. That means my F10 has an "eco <something>" setting as well. In other words, the next ride/state setting above the very bottom on your car, should cause it to remember, under your profile/key fob; that, you always want the "auto start/stop" off.
I also recall, getting to these preferences, comfort mode, auto start/stop, economy settings via the iDrive 'menu'. Similar to forcing the daytime running lights not to turn on.

I have a 2015 428i Grand Coupe and detest the automatic on/off (makes me feel like I have lost control of car at stops but supposed to help on gas mileage) but I leave mine off at all times. Not aware of BMW has changed that or not.

This is strange, I have a 2018 M550i with x-drive and my car does remember the setting. If I turn it on, it's on the next time I start the car (and vice versa). I didn't ask for a code change and that's how it's been since I got the car...

I’m a trainable monkey so my standard start-up is a four button push done by rote (start, ASS off, accept the idiot warning, shift to Adaptive Mode). When I get tunnel-carpel from all that repetitive motion maybe I can sue someone?

Been thinking about connecting with the Amazing Almaretto for him to make it only one button (understand the last three can be coded)

Buy Bimmercode and and connector and save your time and arm muscles if not splurging for a pro coder right now. Those are easy codings and it is a breeze to do. For anti-dazzle lights and other more complex items, go to a coder like Almeratto.

Always use Auto S/S in L.A. traffic. Seamlessly smooth with Auto Hold engaged and saves a few MPG. To switch Auto S/S off, use the 2 finger method while pressing the ignition button.

People always miss the key point of the owner not wanting SS and reply by either telling you why you do want it or providing the insight of turning it off on each start up.

I don't like it. I love my 540 but I hate SS and it annoys the piss out of me that I can't turn it off like my x5. I also want the car to shut off the idrive when the drivers door opens so the stereo doesn't play in the garage. Time to buy a code tool and OBD dongle.

Just got my M550 coded mainly to default the auto start/stop function to its l’ASR setting which is OFF. The thing was so aggressive sometimes shutting down the engine while the car was still rolling to a stop sign. My life is beautiful now. I also took the opportunity to make a few changes to the gadgetry:

- default active cruise control to the shortest distance (as opposed to the longest)
- play video when the car is in motion
- trunk close feature via the key fob

I could have also got the fake sound removed but it doesn’t bother me.

Strongly recommended.

Yeah I used to just put into Sport, but then I decided to get Bimmercode and code the aptly named ASS to remember the last setting, so I turned it off, then turned off the car and when turned back on the ASS was off. Simple. Also got rid of the legal disclaimer. Unfortunately, on the 540 you can't change the cruise control distance via coding. And the 540 apparently doesn't have the fake sound, so nothing to do there. Is the trunk close feature useful? Haven't done that. Also, I rode recently in a friend's 2017 520 (?) which they had bought Certified, and its ASS was off all the time. They know nothing about cars so could not have coded it off. But there it was. Did the older models remember the last ASS setting or did some prior owner code it off?--Bob
