Well today I got my update done on my 04' 330i w/zhp. I went from software 39.2 to 40.1. This software is supposed to correct the idle problem (which the 39.2 update did for me) and it is also supposde to help with the power dip at around 4000 - 4300 rpms (see dyno below). So far I have put 30 miles on the car and it feels much better. I dont think the hesitation at 4kpms is completly gone (according to butt dyno) but it certainly feels better. The car pulls more evenly and smoothly. I have no idle or vibration issues so far. From what I was told is that there really is no complete fix due to the resonance valve (see image below) which opens/closes around 4k rpms. Anyone know different? Overall I would recommend ZHP owners to get the software update done. It is of no charge to you even if you are out of your 4 year/50k mile warranty because there is a BMW service bulletin about this.

Yes.

I never really noticed the 4krpm thing to begin with. You have to remain consious of what bimmerfest fools you into thinking you feel... :)

I can't wait until BiM-COM is released for the E46.. maybe we can do these DME upgrades ourselves...

I had my car serviced on Tuesday (15k service) and asked them to upgrade to 40 (I had it upgraded to 39.2 at 8k miles - after which the dip was gone and returned again after ECU adjusted). They did NOT do the upgrade, stating they cannot just upgrade it without cause (I told the service advisor about the lag at 4k rpm), they also searched and found no service bulletins apparently :mad:

Do you have the bulletin number or a scan by any chance ?

You are welcome to come drive my car and feel for yourself, I'm in Cupertino.
Sorry I dont have the service bulletin for 40.1. A lady from BMW NA told me about it.

Try asking them what the problem is and tell them that drop is noticeable and annoying. If they don't believe it, try and get them to ride with you where you show them the lag on your car and on a regular 330i on their lot. (Hope their 330i doesn't show the dip too badly)

Then ask them to try updating the software to see if it fixes the problem because that dip is horrible....anything to try and get them to update your car.

:stupid: I've never noticed it either. Maybe I already have 39.2 or 40.1 in my ECM. Anyone know if my August 2004 built ZHP ('05 model year) would have either of these newer software versions?

I'm with you, my car pulls til redline without any hesitation. I think this might be earlier ZHPs or something. My build date is 05/2004 for the record.

My build date is 02/04 so I dont know when they swithed. In fact the 39.2 update didnt come out until 9/17/04. That is the date the service bulletin was issued so it may have come out just slightly before than.

Here's how you can check:

Instructions to access the hidden OBC functions:
1. Hold Trip Reset while turning ignition key to on position
2. OBC should show "Test"
3. Use Trip Reset to select function 19.0 that unlocks all the features
3. Wait for display to show "Off"
4. Depress Trip Reset for 1/4 second and release it
5. With no delay press Trip Reset several times to select one of the following function s

If we access hidden OBC functions is this an invasive procedure or "read-only"? In other words, by accessing these functions could one really screw up their beloved 330i if something is not done correctly?

Also, anyone know if the latest software should be applied to a vehicle that does not seem to be exhibiting any issues? I guess what I am trying to understand is, do we apply this update like we would a "patch" for our computer as a "pro-active" measure or only if there is a known problem?

It is my understanding that the OBC functions listed will only show the h/w and s/w versions of the cluster - they don't show you what DME version you are running.

Eric, 1) they are read-only if you wish to play around and 2) It's something you may want to mention to the dealer next time you are in. Only takes them a few minutes to perform the upgrade, so why not.. It could fix problems your car has yet to exhibit.

I had my car at the dealer today for its first official oil service at 12,100 miles. I told my SA about how the idle would go unstable randomly and that I had a 4,000 rpm lag. When I picked my car up this afternoon I was told nothing was done because the issue could not be verified either via stored fault codes or when it was road tested. :mad:

I was asked to bring in the car when it happens. WFT, did I not say it was random. :confused:

I don't think DME firmware updates are one of the things it will be able to do. I don't see any mention of that on VAG-COM's feature list either. :dunno:

Customize programmable settings, yes. Update vehicle firmware? I doubt it. But I can't wait either. :)
