Hi

I have a weird headlight issue tonight on my 2007 X5 3.0D. In short my lights appear to be short circuiting?

When my lights are in the 'Auto' position both halo lights come on and the outer dipped beam lights come on but the inner light flashes for an instant (then goes out and stays out)then the right fog light comes on the instant the flash ends.

In the Off position (engine running) my halos both come on.

In the On position both halo lights come on and the outer dipped beam lights come on but the inner light is off and the fog lights stay off as they should.

Any thoughts anyone? Cheers

Update

OK.....fog light coming on could be a default safety thing I just read about in another post.

Could the flash I noted above be my low beam trying to come on and failing causing the module to direct power to the fog light and if so can you still get low light form a failed HID Xenon light (because I definitely have low light from them BOTH)?

Never worked with HID before....back to school for me here.

I'm definitely far from being one of the great minds on here but a video would help them immensely.

Doesn***8217;t the FRM allow some tens of short circuits before one is locked out?

Thanks for looking guys. I have uploaded a video of what is happening. I turned the lights on 4 times in the video and it's dipped/low beam each time:

1st & 2nd Time: Left side comes on, then right fog comes on then right side.

3rd Time: Both left and right came on simultaneously then fog light comes on.

4th Time: Left side comes on then the fog light and you can perhaps see the slight flash when the left comes on.

Once (off video) the exposed light grew incredibly bright before fading back and the fog coming on.

Do I just buy two new bulbs or is something else wrong?

Cheers

Cheers. Learn the function of the Footwell Module - FRM - if your car has one. It is central to functions of the lights.

Just to close this out....this is exactly what the car is supposed to do! It's all programmed into the footwell module and is part of the adaptive headlight 'thingy'. My self levelling adjuster had broken on one headlight and was throwing the beam pattern off causing issues/poor illumination and perhaps confusing the unit. Adjuster fixed and all is now well.

Yes. IIRC all the modules will attempt to do their various functions and tests a certain number of times before giving up if there is a short detected. 10-30 times depending on the module. The short counter may need to be reset after the short is addressed for things to work properly again.
