Hey y'all,

newbie here with a dumb question. I made the switch over from Audi to BMW just a month or so ago and now I'm in a CPO 2015 328xi Sports Wagon. Couldn't be more pleased with the performance. It's pre-LCI so N20 engine, but I just had a few quick questions to clear things up. Maybe you all can help me.

So I looked at this car two separate times before riding home in it on the second visit. I just had to have it. I love wagons, hatches, and anything practical that still feels nimble.

My question is regarding my heated seats. As I was fiddling with it before leaving the lot (both visits were after work so it was getting dark, etc), I noticed that I had the buttons for heated seats on the dash (that look completely OEM based on other F31 pictures) but never tried using them because I live in Florida and it was crazy hot both days. Right before finishing the documentation, I asked my sales rep, "hey man, I noticed I have the buttons and lights for front heated seats but they don't do anything when I press them. Do I not have heated seats and they're just dummy buttons?" and it was kind of comical. Each CPO rep simultaneously rolled out of their glass window offices and said, "No sir, if you have the buttons, you have heated seats. We'll schedule you an appointment for Tuesday (two days later) just to see where the problem lies and get them all hooked up," which they did. In the shop immediately, put me in a loaner x1, etc. I was happy with the service. Get a call saying to come up to the service shop, and spoke with a friendly gentleman who had pulled my VIN and told me "what we're looking for here is the cold weather package, which was not optioned out on this vehicle." So I just accepted it. He did say on the bright side, they caught a crack in the front lip spoiler and had that replaced free of charge which was cool.

I immediately went home and started doing some research. I was confused - the cold weather package for an F31 2015 328xi wagon comes with heated front AND rear seats, driver/passenger side mirror defrosters, headlight washers, and a heated steering wheel. I had none of the buttons associated with those, which is sort of what I had come to expect with german cars. No dummy buttons, if they have the button with the icon on it and it was pressable, then they should function. If the option was not selected, there would be a blank, unpressable button in place of the other buttons. I even looked in other F30/F31 sedans/wagons and confirmed that the button with the icon was indeed NOT there in those without the CWP. After reading the forums, I also discovered and front/passenger heated seats can be an individual option if you don't want the rest of the goodies.

Naturally, I called a couple BMW specialist shops who were puzzled as well and confirmed that if the button is there, they should theoretically work. but I get no lights on the dash nor does my booty get warm after pressing them.

I'm thinking the service tech just pulled my vin, didn't see the CWP optioned, and did no further research, but before I take it back and say hey, take a closer look, because I think I might actually have heated seats, or even take it to a specialist shop who offered a free consultation to confirm whether they should be working and just aren't.

It's not a huge deal to me. I live in FL, where heated seats are used MAYBE a couple weeks out of the year. My deal with it is more of the principle of the matter. I was sold this CPO car under the impression that I did have heated front and passenger seats and they would fix them after signing.

I understand the elements are buried within the seat so theres no super easy way to confirm visually, but is there anything UNDER the seat that could tip me off?

Thanks in advance. Also, this car is WAY sportier than my StaSUS 2011 A4 or even my tuned Ford Focus ST. Couldn't be happier to be part of the BMW family.

EDIT: two pics, the first being my first offically self-purchased vehicle and the second being my mom's 2015 640ci convertible (apparently she couldn't let me have my moment. JK, she badly needed to replace her electrically retarded '04 SMG 645ci)

Hey John,

I also live in Florida and use my heated seat option all the time. I'm probably older than you(76) and play competitive tennis three times a week and use the heated seats to loosen me up going to the courts and coming home after a match. So, if you got'em make sure they work and you might use them more than you think.

Hey Joe,

Funny - I play tennis up in NE FL as well. I loved having them in my Audi. My dad constantly asks me why I'm obsessing over them if I only am going to need to use them two days out of the year and when I try to explain that it's nice to have, at the very least, the option to warm yourself up quick when you need to. Really, I shouldn't have to justify it. I like a warm butt. I was told if the buttons were there, then you should be able to get heated front seats. I was misinformed by my sales rep, but at the same time, I don't want to blame him because he did a good job fighting his GM down on the price to get to within my range. I'm seeing if there is an easy fix. Maybe some expertise on these forums will lead me in the right direction.

If you have buttons, you have heated seats. If you don't have them, that button is just blank--no icon/no LED indicators. Unless maybe the prior owner modded to put fake buttons there. :tsk: If you press them and the lights don't come on -- dumb Q -- did anyone check the fuse?

Hey tex,

That was what the local BMW specialist shop mentioned as an explanation as well, but it seems like a strange thing to do to a brand new car? I believe I am the second owner.

Your decoded vin does not indicate seat heating option.

Here is a link to me pressing the buttons (car is on btw, even though you can't hear much outside the cabin :p)

https://www.dropbox.com/s/j9sy8n0y739h7qz/Video%20Nov%2002%2C%202%2017%2033%20PM.mov?dl=0

See if y'all can open that, just some good old fashioned button pressing.

I uploaded some more pictures here showing: A) a panoramic picture of the interior B) Driver's side seat heater button C) Passenger side seat heater button D) a traditional "Dummy" button where the rear fog light switch SHOULD be that I don't have. That kind of button is what I'd expect in place of the heaters.

The other picture is the [very limited] window sticker of this car, only mentioning the packages. If you notice, you'll also see that the option list says "Dark Burl Walnut wood trim" which I have none of in the car. Maybe there were some interior mods done prior to my purchasing, its hard to say. I checked the owner history and it was a demo car for the first 4-5k miles and then one owner before me. Immaculate condition in and out if you ask me to describe the condition of the vehicle.

What about the rear heated seats? Do you have the buttons?

The photo I posted also shows the Dark Burl Walnut which is a nicer option than what is installed in your's. I wouldn't be surprised if the BMW dealer swapped the trim into another vehicle to upsell another one. Not many people like the aluminium over the other options. Unless as a demo it got beaten up and they swapped some of the interior pieces.

Still doesn't explain the non-heated seats button.

Does the vehicle history show where the first owner had it registered? Also the demo dealership location?

Before someone ran the VIN, I would have guessed a blown fuse - but the fact he VIN decoder shows no heated seats leads me to assume the button cluster was changed out for some reason and they just happened to use one that had the heated seat buttons.
The lights don't light up I assume? Strange.

The car all together is odd...no heated seats (though it has buttons but vin decoder indicates it shouldn't) and no walnut trim (although the vin decoder indicates it should) :dunno:

If it's cold and wet in winter and you got arthritis not only heated seats, heated steering wheel...and for the menopausal wife...um...it won't affect SWMBO.

I also decoded using http://bimmer.work/ it has the supposed interior and exterior pictures (granted from stock photos) but with that VIN you get walnut trim and blanks where those seat heater buttons are in your pictures. at least it shows a white car. something is very weird about this. I hope yo find out and let us know. good luck
