Ok, not exactly coding related, but perhaps you techie guys can help?

I have a 2009,Jan 30 build date E92 with Navi. I have the original BMW maps in the car.

I recently bought a USB 2013 Nav update thumb drive that was used by another person to update their car. I've tried to initiate a read of the navi data via the USB input in the car, to no avail.

Question: is it possible to take the files on the USB, and create DVDs that can be loaded from the DVD drive in the car, the same way the dealer would?

If so, how?

Assuming your car has a CIC (not sure when E92 started), are you using the USB port in the glovebox? If so, it might be worthwhile getting your CIC updated to the last firmware rev,as that is what enabled the USB map updates in my 04/2009 E60 with CIC.

Starting with 2013, maps for the CIC *only* come in USB format for the North American market. There are no DVDs produced for the North America market anymore. Updating the navigation system can only be done two ways. Via USB stick (attached to the Glovebox USB port) and via ISTA/P (where ISTA/P loads the data via the MOST bus, it should also want to update the firmware at the same time so this should be a one-time event, afterwards you can use USB).

2009 models require a software update to the CIC in order to update over USB (which is why BMW notes with 2009 models require a dealership trip for the update).

Most 2009 owners I have worked with (since I can generate FSC codes) have been able to complain to their dealership about a few known iDrive bugs (like the shopping cart bug) and get their software updated under warranty and then get the ability to update via USB as a side effect.

Only the European market still produces their updates on DVD. You can copy the DVD's to a USB stick and load the maps via USB if you want but unfortunately it doesn't work the other way around.

I've ordered a set of these, cost me $18.69:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/231031044178?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

Assuming they load, I'll order an FSC code to activate. Will keep the thread updated with the results, in case there are others like me who have to go the DVD route instead of USB.
That is North American Professional version for older non-Hard Drive CCC system, and not Premium version for newer Hard Drive CIC system. Those DVD's do not get installed at all. On CCC system, you put either DVD1 or DVD2 in your drive depending on where you live, and it stays in and runs from the DVD Drive. They won't work in CIC. You need Premium Map version for CIC.

Ok, well worth a shot. I'll keep looking in case these don't work.

If you get it, let me know, as there are others in your same boat, and I would like to Image the DVD's.

Will do. I figure, I might screw up a bit but if I can help others out I will. Hopefully back in a few days with positive results. :)

Crap. I'm coming to the conclusion I will only be able to update to 2012 maps.

1. My car won't accept USB updates because it is pre 09/09 build.
2. Apparently, the '13 update is one big package, about 22 Gb, which won't fit on a DVD-DL (Max 8 Gb) but does fit onto the 32 Gb USB sticks they are now using.
3. Correct?

Anyone have a spare set of 2012 update disks they would be willing to send me for postage?

As I said, the 2013 North American premium 3 Double Layer Double Density DVD Set is available, but extremely hard to find.

If you want 2012 DVD's, PM me, and I will send you a link to the DVD .iso Images online, that you can just download and burn with ImgBurn.

Completed creation of 2012 Map DVDs, obtained FSC code, now at 54% update in the car, and climbing.

While I would have liked to have the 2013 updates, I'm well satisfied with 2012 update, at a net cost of $62.

Thanks again to members Shawnsheridan (DVDs) and Dracon (FSC code) for assistance. Much appreciated.

Glad it's working for you.

You may be stuck at 2012 though. I would look into getting the firmware on your CIC updated, so see then if it will accept USB Update for newer map versions, and which also happen to install in 1/3 the time as the DVD version.

^^^ Oh yeah. :(. Sitting here watching DVD load.

I'm definitely glad to be at 2012. Thing is, I have a Dinan tune on top of the OEM SW, car is really running well, I just don't want to mess with it at the moment. Thanks again. :)

Understood, but you do not need to Program the whole car. You can Flash CIC with WinKFP to update the firmware on only it.
