Alright so I got the green light from the wife to sell the mini (baby is getting bigger so we need a bigger car) and pick up a 335 sedan. We're looking at the xdrives mainly for her for the snow. However, here are the options in my area:

2008 335xi: 40,000 miles for $17,800
2011 335i xdrive: 56,000 miles for $19,800

Other options, kinda not willing though:
2010 535i xdrive: 47,000 for $20,000
2013 320i xdrive: 8,000 miles $24,000

From reading all of the reviews. Fellow drivers are saying the 335's are mechanical nightmares but also a driver's car. So I'm wondering which is the better deal and most reliable of the 2 335's above. If not recommended what 3 or 5 series xdrives would you recommend. THanks for the help!

I would go for the 2011 335i xdrive, that's the most reliable among these. The 535i is similar but it has more parts so it's higher in maintenance and you seem to prefer the 3 series.

My 2010 550i hasn't had any issues (77k now). But the E60 is missing some basic stuff, like the Combo box w Bluetooth audio streaming.

Definitely not the 2008 35i since those are the early years of that engine model.

The N20 engine of the 2013 320i doesn't seem to be reliable. Timing chain guide problems are common. Minor coolant leaks. If it still has the plastic oil filter housing that needs to be replaced to an updated aluminum one. They are prone to crack.

Regarding injectors, hpfp and turbo chargers the risk of failure is similar on the 2010+ models.

So of the 335is what year was the most reliable if any or does each year have their own gremlins. I don't mind getting into a 5 series as long as its reliable like my first bimmer (e46 325xi) and costing the same as a 3 series. More bang for the buck, is what im getting at.

Wolf, Get the 2011. I have one, and have not had any problems. I don't think there is really any difference in driving enjoyment, but the N55 engine seems more trouble free. This assumes there is not some underlying issue with this particular 2011 vehicle , of course.

911/Boxter is a driver's car. M Division makes driver's cars. 335i is a shadow of that. 2009+ preferred.

Mechanical nightmare 335i is not. Expensive to have dealer repair they are.

Ain't got Japanese reliability. Massive base of detailed DIY infi which I recommend to anyone out of warranty.

i have a 2007 335xi.. nice car. no problem whatsoever. Im selling mine for 15k just bacause m going back home overseas. but get the 2008 335xi. twin turbo, wheel drive.
