The update needs to be plugged into the USB port in the glove compartment. Let me know if it doesn't work. I remember having the same issue but don't remember how I solved it. If you are still having problems I'll try to duplicate the install on my car.

yeah i did put it in the glove compartment.

The software update is available at www.bmw.com/update.
In a previous post I stated you had to use the glove box USB port that is in ERROR. According to page 206 of the manual you need to use the center armrest port. Then from there go to settings:software update: start update.

Thanks for the tip! I can finally put my BMW usb key fob to use! I hope the update helps with the lag for the music to start for my iPhone.

The update on the BMW website is from last December. However, when I bought my 650ix vert in June, I was surprised that the 12-11 update had not yet been applied.

Southern - just picked up a 2012 650i vert with 6k miles in Birmingham yesterday. Tried to visit the BMW update website today, but got the following error message after accepting the "terms". It accepted my VIN, so do you think that BMW is just doing maintenance on a Sunday?
You don't have permission to access /bmw_prod/_common/shared/owners/bluetooth/bin/UPD01004.bin on this server.
Additionally, a 403 Forbidden error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request.
I've owned an E28, E39, E46 vert, and E60, plus I'm an IT geek. I'm reading through everything I can find about what this car can do, and I feel completely ignorant. Thanks Southern for the guide. Sadly, the ipod music delay lives on. I'm going to try and remove my main library of 3.2k songs and just load a playlist to see if that changes anything.

Not really sure what to tell you about the software issue. There may be something to your web maintenance idea. I'd try again tomorrow or some time in the near future and see if it is back up an running.

I haven't noticed a single difference since installing the new software. Hopefully another is in the works to make the e-mail and texts work for the iPhone once iOS 6 is available.
A BMW software update is not necessary for this. The car is already capable with the required Bluetooth stack. As long as Apple adds this as promised, we should be good.
