I keep getting the error message "the vehicle could not be identified. Please check the access to the vehicle and check whether the testing-analysis-diagnosis has been activated."

I have put so much time into this and even purchased a new computer based on the specifications and requirements for ista. I just can't get it figured out. Someone PLEASE help!! Thanks in advance!!

It would be helpful if you indicated:
1) The Source of ISTA+, ISTA-D or whatever version you have installed, including a Link to the MEGA site or whatever site you downloaded it from;
2) The specific Error Message that appears (after indicating exactly what selection you made, such as "Operations > Read Out Vehicle Data"); Best method is to attach a ScreenPrint of the Error Message;
3) The Last-7 Characters of your vehicle's VIN so we know what model you are trying to connect to.

Try to Navigate in your ISTA+ Installation, when NOT connected to any vehicle, by doing the following:
1) Enter Last-7 Characters of VIN in "Input VIN" text box which appears when you click "Operations" in upper-left of opening screen, and after ~ 30 seconds correct "Vehicle Information" should appear. If it DOES, your ISTA Installation is OK.

2) Then try selecting "Vehicle Management > Troubleshooting > Text Search > and enter "DME Supply" in "Search string" textbox. If you get a "Service plan" screen that shows "SSP Supply, DME control unit", Double-click on that SSP, and you should get a wiring diagram (SSP) for DME Voltage Supply.

Let us know if that much of your ISTA installation works, WITHOUT being connected to Vehicle. Also provide ScreenPrint of Error Message you see if "Read Out Vehicle Data" fails.

If you ARE able to get results described in 1 & 2 above when NOT connected to vehicle, then do the following:
1) Note the "Symbol Bar" at top of ISTA+ Screen. There is a "wrench/spanner" icon as 5th symbol from left; click that wrench symbol; and "Administration" dialog box opens;

2) Note the Six (6) Tabs: "Client settings" through "VCI Config"; click that VCI Config Tab;

3) New Screen opens with "Interface type:" at top-left under Tabs. Select FIRST choice under "Interface type:", namely "Ediabas default settings (ediabas.ini)". Some versions, such as the old MEGA Download previously linked by BimmerGeeks had the default setting "Dealer organisation" (4th line). If you do NOT change to "Ediabas default settings (ediabas.ini)", the program will work OK for viewing documents, but will NOT connect to vehicle.

Please let us know how it goes, providing details from attempting those steps, and any questions.

There are probably MANY reasons why a particular ISTA installation CANNOT IDENTIFY a vehicle when "Read Out Vehicle Data" Tab is clicked. Some other things to check are listed below. However the FIRST thing I would check is the setting for "Interface Type", which should be: Ediabas default settings (ediabas.ini)
Make sure the circle in front of that Interface Type has a dot in it and the others do NOT.

See the three attached screens that show HOW to get to that setting (VCI Config Tab). Please let us know what circle has the dot, and if that is NOT the cause of your issue, then let us know WHERE you got the ISTA Download, the Brand/Source of your Cable, and whether or not you can connect with that Cable using INPA.

Start with getting Inpa to work.
Turbo cars with tunes are noted to interfere with diagnostics.
The tunes usually have a bypass mode in which diagnostics can be run.

ista problems E90 Down! E90 Down! Updating Failure ista problems

Be sure you have a K/D can cable .
A new computer may not have all the C++ redistributables so check it.
You never identified your car and any mods it has.
Specifically the year and motor type.

No as the underlying files are shared with Ista D .
Best to get a combo pack or Standard tools (Inpa suite ) that plays
with the version of Ista you have.
Bimmergeeks Standard tools and the download they used to have worked together.
If you want programming and to use Inpa you need standard tools.

E90post has a whole sub forum dedicated to coding which is where
the above link came from .

In regards to Inpa setup .
You have to plug the cable in to set up the Interface in the device manager.
You can do this before plugging it into the car.
You set the serail port 1(usually) and the latency to 1 and the bits to 1 inside
the serail port driver.
Then Plug it in select the car type and run functional jobs F3 and F4 to test it.
This just reads all the modules and reports back .

Jok3r5 is on the e90post coding sub forum .
the e90post.com sub forums tend to have more technical knowledge and support.
Especially for coding.

It's somewhat harder to get ista than it used to be.
See the link.

Suggested Action:
I would suggest deleting your existing folders identified below, and then re-installing E-89 Datens & BMW Standard Tools (INPA), as described below. I also indicate below WHERE you can obtain reliable downloads & instructions for installation, along with my observations on your "Error Messages" and reasons WHY I am suggesting REINSTALL (leave ISTA alone for now -- it's a separate issue, and you indicate you can access documents OK -- the DME Supply wiring diagram?)

What Reinstall SHOULD Do:
You never indicated WHAT your GOALS are, but INPA will allow DIAGNOSIS of any fault in ANY Module. ISTA provides the Documents such as wiring diagrams and Repair Procedures (without being connected to your vehicle). So between the two, you can do most anything. Getting an OPERATING INPA installation (EDIABAS) MAY correct your ISTA "Connect to Vehicle" issues. Prevailing view expressed on forums is that a working INPA/EDIABAS installation is needed as a pre-condition for ISTA to work properly. That may depend upon the type and SIZE of your ISTA installation.:unsure:

Complicating Factors:
There are MANY sources of DIFFERENT INPA & ISTA software available on the Web, and even MANY different sources listed on Bimmerfest over the years, directly or indirectly. The ISTA application I installed was a 9.98 GB "rar" file downloaded from MEGA, previously-linked by BimmerGeeks on their "Downloads" site. It installed a "Rheingold" folder, 21.1 GB, in my C:\Program Files (x86) folder.

There are some "Standalone" installations that reportedly-require 5 times that disc space. Just browsing the forums, one sees MANY folks complaining they can't get their INPA or ISTA apps to work. The answer is probably DIFFERENT in almost every case, as there are so many hardware & software variables, from cable to download, what was downloaded and source, to install instructions, to ability of user to follow those instructions, ...

My Own Experience: BimmerGeeks-Linked Software WORKS:
I also downloaded BMW Standard Tools (INPA) and E89 Datens from the BimmerGeeks "Downloads" Web page. The Installation Instructions are on a one-page text file found in the folder after "Un-zipping" the "rar"/compressed file. Current Links to those downloads can be found in the attached pdf: "E9x References, 210523 Revision". If any questions, please let me know.

Deleting OLD INPA/Standard Tools Install BEFORE Installing New:
Simply Delete the following Folders which were (should/may have been) installed in your "C:" Drive when you installed E89 Datens & Standard Tools (INPA):
C:\EC-APPS
C:\EDIABAS
C:\Entwicklungsdaten (empty folder)
C:\NCSEXPER
C:\NFS-Backup (empty folder)

Best practice is to check "Date last saved" in Windows Explorer for EACH folder, and make sure ALL folders listed above have SAME date, which SHOULD be date you installed Standard Tools. When you install NEW download, I would suggest taking the time to save/record EACH step you followed in the Download & Install, and ALSO, check your C: Drive directory for folders added on the date of installation, AND the size of each. For example, BimmerGeeks-linked Standard Tools install created a 2.18 GB "EDIABAS" folder on C:\ Drive.

Check your C:\Program Files (x86) folder to see if you have a "Rheingold" folder there, and record the SIZE of that folder. DO NOT DELETE that Rheingold Folder.

Download/Install BimmerGeeks-Linked (1) E89 Datens & (2) BMW Standard Tools:
See BimmerGeeks "Downloads" Web page for links to those TWO downloads:
Let us know if any issue in downloading from the MEGA sites linked, OR with finding/following the Instructions for Installation (text file should be included in download, after "Unzipping".
As suggested above, RECORD each step followed in Download & Install, and SAVE the downloads on a flash drive or other backup media, in case you need to "Re-install" in future.

WHY do this?
Your existing INPA installation has issues.:eek:;)
I have two different versions of INPA installed on different computers. One is older "All German" version, and other is BimmerGeeks-linked version with Menus and such in English. NEITHER has any FOLDERS in the "C:\EC-APPS\INPA\BIN" folder. ONLY files in that BIN folder. Yet, your first error message posted (related to INPA Startup) clearly indicates the program is looking for a "CFGDAT" subfolder in the BIN folder.

The CFGDAT files are used to "Configure Data", display menu choices, or present selections you may make in the "Script Selection" dialog box which SHOULD appear as the 2nd step of opening INPA. That's just a "Geeky" way of saying when you first open INPA, it looks in the CFGDAT folder for data to insert into the SHELL that appears in the opening screen. If I understand your ScreenPrint correctly, when you open INPA, it does NOT correctly fill-in the selection data on what SHOULD be the opening screen.

See FIRST attached ScreenPrint below for example of that screen on BG INPA version. That shows the "Script Selection" Box which appears superimposed on opening screen AFTER you select "E90" (F3 in BG INPA Version). The "Tutorial" shows older INPA version, where E90 is F6.

If I understand correctly, your existing INPA installation has NOTHING on the screen, or in the boxes in the Task Bar at bottom of screen, that allows you to select "E90", which is the FIRST Step to use INPA. Simplest way to get a functional INPA installation is to do the steps described above. Although it will take an hour or two/three to do CORRECTLY, if you take the time to do that, you will probably learn a few things (that you can then teach us), and get a working INPA installation in the process.

I also attach a pdf: "INPA Tutorial Quickstart" which has some sample INPA Screens, and explains the basics of setup & using "INPA > Functional Jobs > F2 Identification & F4 > Error Memory, All Modules" to get started. There is a LOT more to INPA (or ISTA) than simply reading codes, and the "Tutorial" explains some of the OTHER things you can do in INPA.

Please don't hesitate to ask for questions on any phase of Download, Install, Setup, Cable connection, Functional Jobs, Module Connection, Fault Details & Freeze Frame Data, Live Data, Activations, etc. NOBODY here is an "Expert" on INPA, ISTA, or anything else. We're all hopefully trying to learn what we don't know.:geek:

Yes but I would keep a backup copy as it's getting harder and harder to get these files.
500 gb to 1tb drives are common now so at most this uses 100gb if you don't install ista p
which is something to stay away from anyway.
