I got a rock chip on my hood and attempted to touch it up myself. It isn't looking all that good right now.

I tried wet sanding the mound of touchup paint with 1000 grit sandpaper but scratched up a little of the area around the original rock chip (I am assuming I just scratched the clear coat?).

What should I do about the scratch from the 1000 grit paper? I tried to hide it with Meguiar's Scratch X and 3M IHG. It's a little better but you can still see it from certain angles. Do I need to buy some 2000 grit paper and wet-sand out the 1000 grit scratches, then re-wash and apply polish/wax again? I am just scared to start sanding away with the 2000 grit paper because I don't want to make the scratches worse.

On a related note, if I have other scratches on my clear coat, is 2000 grit wet-sanding the answer? Again, Scratch-X helped but didn't get rid of the scratches completely.

Thanks for your help. Just don't know what to do at this point.

I've found Meguiars HEAVY CUT CLEANER seems to work, then follow up with a mild polish and wax.
