Try this:
1. Not sure whether the key needs to be in acc. or start position, or this is even necessary.
2. Apply foot brake.
3. Lower both windows a few inches
4. Open top levers on both sides.
5. Lift the top manually a few inches.
6. Close top levers (just so they don't stick out).
7. Push button, and the top should drop to its resting point.

Is it possible someone has modified your car? Normally you need to apply the break as a way to keep someone from putting the top down at speed, but some people like to change things, so maybe someone disabled this feature on your car.

Lowering z3 softtop

Thanks for all the replies.my roof goes down to the point where it needs to
Bend.then it just locks.if I disconnect the electric motor it lowers all the way.but I need to bend the last section by hand.what does the small micro switch do ?
