My hood opening mechanism cable snapped at the tie next to the pull handle.

I'm going to buy a cable end and splice it to the original one.

Anyone has any advice or experience doing this?

Going to the hardware store to look for cable splice metal links.

Buy a new cable link and install it.

To open the bonnet, use suitable pliers or Vise Grips to pull the cable.

The new cable system is not necessary in this case, as this was only the final inch of the cable that snapped.

I fixed this permanently by linking the new cable with end head that fits the mechanism, with the original cable, via a heavy duty, 8 [mm] screw tightened, steel splice.

That solution cost 2.5$.

It is remarkably strong, but you have to make sure you are using a "tube like", strong, heavy duty splice.

Like the ones (metal) in these photos:

This works perfectly if its just the final inches of the cable that snapped.

Evidently I'm ordering the replacement full system in my next bill of materials for future needs as I intend to keep the E39 forever.
