How rare are coupes?

Hello All,
I went to my local bmw dealer yesterday to see about getting a new orient blue 325ci w/ sp, xenon, moon, hk, and leatherete. I was told that we would more then likely need to order the car since it would be hard to find this car by doing what he called a "locate." Thing is, the wait time is too long for me. (3 months  !) My question is... does a dealer locate cover the entire US and are coupes as rare around here as they are in other parts of the country? I'm willing to change my options around some and maybe settle with jet black or metalic black. Is there a good chance I'm going to find what I want through a locate? How has everyone else's experience been when buying a new car through a dealer locate. Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks...

Best case scenario is the dealer finds a coupe that is already en-route with the items you want. It gets marked as sold, and you get it.

I know how painful the wait can be. I pretty much went insane... others on the board can tell you how terrible I was. :D 3 months is longer than usual for the east coast though... have you shopped other dealers? Sounds like the dealer you went to sold out of their allocations.

Mine took 6 weeks from order to delivery.

Personally, I think the wait is worth it. It sucks every day of the wait, but there is something to be said about getting a car exactly how you want it, with no compromises.

I think you're right...

Cause my dealer is telling we would schedule for a late june production. If luckey, couldn't I find a dealer with late May allocations still open?

And, getting the car the way exactly wanted is probably the best thing to do. I may regret not waiting in the future which would suck.

Best thing is to call around. You may have to go a little father out of your way to pick up your new car, but you'll get it faster, and often with a bit more of a discount. 6-8 weeks is a good wait time to expect. 3 months for East coast delivery for anything other than a limited production car like an M car is too long in my opinion.

I promised myself when I was getting ready to buy my 330Ci that I would not compromise and I would get it exactly how I wanted it. I'm glad I ordered it... it has been a year and there hasn't been any "I wish I had ordered..." thoughts running through my mind.

Pretty soon you'll need a continuous intravenous Prozac drip. :thumb: I can't even believe how long your wait is. :yikes:

Try Inskip

If you're willing to try the RI area, try Inskip Autocenter. I'm waiting for my 3rd car to come in.....

Around Philthy-delphia, coupes are definitely a rarity. After visiting several lots over the last few weeks, I was surprised to find any at all, while sedans are there by the dozen.

Basically, we can broaden our search from a "market" level, to a "regional" level, all the way out to a "national" level. This can include cars physically "on the ground" as well as those "in transit", "produced, but not (yet) shipped", "in production", and finally, those in the factory order bank...

The answer to your question relies on your dealer's motivation as much as the particular vehicle's availability...

Rare. I live in the SF Bay Area and no one in the area (there are 7-8 dealers within the "greater" Bay Area) had a coupe in their inventory set up even close to the way I wanted it so I am ordering. That's OK, it gives me 2 1/2 months to tear my hair out and pre-order any required Zaino products.

If I were you, I'd order exactly what I wanted. Your going to own the car for a long time and eventhough you are excited to buy a new car, the wait is worh it. (though in NY the wait is only 2 months :) )

Keep in mind this advice comes from a person who always needs instant gratification so beleive me I know the wait can be painful !!!

Hang in there !!
