Hello,
The Check Engine Light on my 2013 328i is on for the first time since I bought it new four and a half years ago. It has only 15K on it and was serviced just six months ago when its Free Maintenance Program ended. There is no other error message and the car seems to be working fine. Are there some ways for me to find out what is the source and severity of error? Is there a menu on the screen to show the detail of error? Is an OBD scanner such as Carly for BMW useful for this purpose?
THX!

You do need to pull the codes to find out why it is on, but if your gas cap is not on tight, it can cause the CEL. Easy to check and may be a quick fix. If it is the issue, you will need to drive a bit before the light goes out after you fix the issue.

To OP, one google search says:

"P143C Engine Trouble Code

Meaning of P143C engine trouble code is a kind of powertrain trouble code and theoretically you can drive for a few weeks or even months with a broken MAF sensor. You will notice a decrease in gas mileage and over time the car will eventually start stalling a lot."

Another search says on a 2006 330i:

P143C -- Direct Ozone Reduction Catalyst Temperature/Radiator Coolant Temperature Correlation

And if yours is N26, 99% of CELs will be covered by 15-yr/150k-mile PZEV warranty.

Thanks for the website link.
Yes, my car has N26 engine. But I don't have to deal with BMW service at the moment as the CEL on my car went away within 2 hours after I spent $50 to order a Creator C110+ BMW Fault Code Reader ;)
PZEV warranty seems to cover a lot of engine emission related issues. I found the parts list and attach it here

The local service is on top of PZEV, as well as ELWs, both of which are highlighted in key data. SAs are very good at identifying chargeable items to BMWNA. :)

Having said that, owners can also become aware of PZEV components and coverage, and communicate with SAs as needed. Basically any CEL will be a good cue to the SAs and owners.

Here are the PZEV-related clauses in my 2013 F30 warranty book.

Manufacturer's Warranty Coverage:
***8211; For 15 years or 150,000 miles,whichever occurs first:
1. If your vehicle fails a Smog Check inspection, all necessary repairs and adjustments will be made by BMWNA to ensure that your vehicle passes the inspection. This is your emission control system PERFORMANCE WARRANTY.
2. If any emission-related part on your vehicle is defective, the part will be repaired or replaced by BMWNA. This is your emission control system DEFECTS WARRANTY.
