(Please excuse the copy/paste from the other bimmer forum)

I've posted an intro thread on what I'm looking for in my first BMW, but I wanted to ask a separate question on what to look for when I actually hit the ground and start physically looking at/driving cars. I plan to get a PPI done by a qualified individual, but what I should be looking for on my own to see if a car makes the first cut?

What should I take with me when I look at the car?

Specific details to check?

Any tips on how to conduct the test drive?

Specific questions to ask?

Thanks in advance for your help!

Look for oil or coolant leaks, listen for squeeking or creeking and see if there are any lights illuminated on the dash. Bring a code reader to see if there are pending codes as well.

And evaluate service history against mileage using common sense and what you can learn on this forum by searching "e39 common problems". Good Luck!
