I Failed To Persuade The Wife

As much as I tried, I couldn't get my wife to switch over to BMW. She's been wanting the SL500 for so long and now that the body style has changed she was desperate to get it before the older, more classic styling would be impossible to get new. She doesn't like the new retro styling and wanted a specific color so it was tough to locate an '02 model with everything she wanted. This weekend we finally found one and she couldn't be happier. I have to admit, the car looks really nice, but on the other hand, my 330ci seems quicker despite the 75+ hp and torque I'm giving up to her. She's more into style than she is performance so this is a good car for her. My guess is I'll be driving the bimmer and thinking I still have the better car. :D

The SL500 is a great car. :) I steal my Mom's whenever I get the chance. Too bad about the slushbox, though. :(

It is a nice car, and still looks nice despite all those years it's been out. But, it's just too expensive, and for all that price, it really ought to have more performance characteristics overall. But, women are known to dig merc sl, clks, slk, saab convertibles, etc etc..
:tsk:
It's amazing how much cleaner the bumper on that car looks without the front plate. Much more so than the 3 series.
Lets all be honest here....

Given a choice between the 2 cars, I wouldn't hesitate a second to take the SL over the 330. The SL's are simply gorgeous cars inside and out. Don't get my wrong - I love my BMW, but Benz's are far and away superior.
Not if you insist on a manual transmission. :p
The last Benz built and designed by the engineers. A truly rock-solid car....
Nate - I beg to differ :) G500 is still being produced, and boy, talk about engineers building a car! :)

SteelGray02ci - awesome! I am also glad to know that I am not the only one preffering old designs of Merc's and Bimmers to new ones (namely 7 series, E-classe, SL-classe).

geomax,
So would I if someone was giving them away. But I wouldn't spend my money on all that expensive machinery. I'll buy the E46 though :)

My wife thanks you... :)

I still enjoy driving my car over hers, but we definitely get more looks when driving the Benz. Can't wait for the weather to warm up a bit so we can keep the top down and have some real fun!

Oh, and yes, we will buckle up. :thumb:

If I had that much to spend on a car, I'd do one of two things: 1) get something with Porsche on the hood; 2) get an M3 or M5 and something else.

If I was given an SL, I might keep it, but I would be just as tempted to sell it.

Nice car, nice wife.

What are all those vertical bars sticking up behind that gray wall? Don't tell me those are all sailboats and there's a marina right behind your new house?!

Very cool!!

I've never been that impressed with Mercedes products. They always struck me as little more than very well built German Buicks; good but not great power, good but not great styling, moderately rewarding driving characteristics, but nothing too hot. The one thing that is exceptional about nearly every Mercedes model is the total lack of value: They have to be the most over-priced cars on the planet (and yes, I am including AMs and Rolls-Royces in that analysis).

But to each their own. I have many friends who swear by the things, even if I don't understand it. I am glad that SteelGrey's wife got her dream car--nothing like finally getting what you've always wanted.

i've brainwashed my wife.

she is really into sporty and light cars.

i think that i've brainwashed her. whenever i point out something like the M5s or E65s on the road, she says, "but don't those weigh 4000lbs?" and makes a face.

she wants a turbo miata when mazdaspeed gets around to it. they've just turbocharged the protege, so it can't be far behind.

Life is pretty good right now. About the only thing I can complain about is my own fault. Washed both cars last night thinking the weather was going to clear up and it's gray and threatening right now. There's probably a bird picking out a spot on my hood, too!

Cheers!

Rough life! Real rough...

So what is the third car just obscured from view? A McLaren F1? :)
