I guess with the impending buildout we got the remaining 18"
James Bond wheels (from the old 7) out of the parts bin...

M5's are still in the "Over-Sticker Zone", and the situation
will surely get worse once the reality sets in that there
won't be any more (for a lonnng time)...

My BMW rep told me yesterday that the mark-up on Z8's is now climbing steadily again since E.O.P. is on the horizon...

The 540i kicks arse!

I got up close and personal with a 540i Sport a few nights ago at the local dealership. MAN, it's gorgeous.

No money, no problems? Yah right. :eeps:

That's my guess.

Jon,

When is the new 5 due to make its debut? I was hoping it would be out in time for the NY Auto Show next april/may.

IMO, those rims look much nicer than the M5 rims.

If I had the need for a car that size AND I had the funds, picking up one of the last of these would be a no-brainer. That is a gorgeous car.

My dealer has had a black one on the lot since they first released the 2003s, and its a 6 speed to boot.

$59xxx. (Although I'm sure there is room to bargain) :(

I don't think you would like it. If you hated the 330, the 540 is denintiely not for you....

Different car, different purpose. I wouldn't buy a 5-series to autocross, just to name one difference.

The rims look HOT! At first glance, it almost looks like a E38 in that pic!

Jetfire nailed it. Different car, different purpose.

I believe I said, "If I had the need for a car that size..."

And it would (theoretically) be in addition to the M3 not as a replacement for.

But I have no need for a car larger than my M3 and I certainly cannot justify a $60K car so I will simply plan to pick one up used should my needs ever change. One thing about the 540s, no DBW throttle.

You yourself have said how little space advantage the E39 has over the E46 :p

I just think you would hate the softness of the 540i because of your 330 experience.

Why not an M5? The DBW is fine in Sport mode, great with Dinan S/W...

Indeed it is. I think the e39 is perhaps the best looking car coming out of the BMW factories right now. As Jon has said before, "the e39 is arguably the best BMW ever built".

I've actually contemplated about trading in my e46 323 for an e39 540i. Nothing wrong with my car, but I just find the e39 gorgeous and more appealing. On a nice backroad, it feels like it handles just as well as an e46, but I'm sure the e46 will outhandle it in tighter corners or in auto-x due to it's smaller size. One thing is for sure: the e39 has better sport seats (e46s are a little too wide), better sports steering wheel (e46 is too thin), and a few other things like materials, etc.
