I noticed a slight fuel smell from my 2006 325i and took it to a nearby garage to have the transfer fuel pump replaced. That went fine. (I think)
But they recommended a "tri-stage" fuel injector cleaning which entails connecting the fuel lines to a gas additive canister and blowing through the cleaner while the engine is running. Then they put some cleaner additive in the gas tank.
Although the car has 170,000 miles on it, I am the original owner and have always enjoyed at least 24 mpg in town and 30 mpg on the road.
Suddenly, my mileage has dropped - 18 mpg in town now!!!!!
The garage says, nothing we did would decrease mileage, try a few more tanks of gas to "flush out" the additive.
It is getting worse. I am on the third tank of gas, and yesterday the mileage was as low as 14.5 mpg.
Does anyone know what might have happened, and what can be done now??????
By the way, this shop works on BMWs but not exclusively, so there might be a knowledge problem at play.
Thanks!
