Inspiration for the e65..?!

It finally hit me the other day what it was about the rear of the new e65 that I just can't stand, aside from the trunk. The taillights remind me of some kind of hybrid Toyota. It's not exact, but definitely some strong similarities... :dunno: :thumbdwn:

The trunklid looks a lot like the E30 M3 and also seems to look like a raised E36 sedan trunk...

There is much truth in that, the E30 M3 trunklid thing has been on my mind since I first saw the E65.

This horse just can't die can it.
I'm not really feeling the likeness. The only thing I see is the V shape of the trunk opening, and the horizonatal touches in the taillights, which a lot of cars use.
Sorry, but the E65 trunk does NOT resemble the Toyota trunks in the pix below. :tsk: Talk about beating a dead horse... :tsk:

Oh come on, Alex! :p I said they weren't exact but they are similar. Look at the outer part of the taillights on the Avalon...look familiar? Then the middle section of the Camry..? Put the two together and it's close. :D I know it's a dead horse, but it had been bugging me for weeks...

Interesting observation - but of course, due to aerodynamics, safety concerns, and industry-standard ideas of what constitutes acceptable interior and cargo space, most modern four door sedans are starting to resemble each other. This is especially true with the most popular segment: intermediate sized family sedans (they almost all look alike to the non-enthusiast).

As far as the previous generation Camry's horizontal tailight treatment goes, this styling feature was copied by Toyota from an Alfa Romeo sedan (I think it was the Alfa 164), proving once again that the Japanese auto industry rarely, if ever, comes up with an original styling idea. They are, however, masters at copying.

Good call! You nailed that one...

And people ask me why Japanese cars are not appealing to me...

Actually, I think it's more of a Dodge Stratus rear end. See for yourself-

The trunk cut line is just like a new Hyundai Sonata. Hyundai came out w/ this before the e65-- so Chris Bangle can't claim that he's being "innovative". In fact, he's copying the designs of a mass market korean car!:lmao:

I read the transcript of his speech in the Roundel. He's not very articulate and his explanations just sound like lots of hand waving and BS. A lot of it was borderline nonsensical ranting. He's talking about aerodynamics in explaining the trunk lid and then he starts saying that aerodynamics also means the way a BMW takes a turn and hugs the road-- as if that's about aerodynamics or is any justification for the trunk. IN another section, he's talking about how great it is because you can put your gold clubs in and then he says something like "gotta make room for golf clubs and cupholder" I realize he was kidding-- but there's no substance to anything he said. And any design that needs that much babble to explain it just isn't good design. Someone get rid of this guy and Van Honky Donk guy who actually designed th e65...
