Insurance Question: Older was Safer?

909 Views 6 Replies 5 Participants Last post by  Nat Brown
Picked up an 02 325i about two weeks ago.... Hadn't sold our 99 323i when we did this so both cars were insured for a bit with identical coverage. Just received my latest policy update and I noticed that a "vehicle injury rating discount" was offered on the 99 but not the 02. Called the Insurance Company HQ and was told that the 99 323i had a rating of 1, just like my 5er, but the 02 325i was a 2. I asked how this could be given they were "identical" models, HP notwithstanding, and I was told that "....there is a misconception that newer is always better... " Any comments??????

Aside from the fact that I don't believe a thing that any insurace company says about how they rate cars without a truly independent third party source backin it up, there a couple things that I can think of. The biggest one is that their claims history on the 325 models has been slightly worse than the 323. If the 323 was already at the very bottom of the "1" rating, it might not take much to put the 325 over onto the other side. The other thing is that they may also be looking back at their old 325 claim histories (e30 old as well as e36). The 325 history is much longer than the abbreviated 323 (short e36 run and e46).

Insurance Old and New

I traded a '97528i for a 330ci, and requested identical insurance. The value of the 528 was about 24,000, the actual funds tied up in the 330ci which had additional accessories like Nav, Bi-Xenons, PDR comes to over 45,000. Now, should I have the misfortune to total the new one, most certainly the insurance company would feel obligated to replace it at my purchase price I hope. They pay more and charge more, eh? My 2 cents/;) ;) :thumb:

Its not the price of the insurance that is in question...

It is not the price of the insurance that is in question... The question is why does an 02 325 have a lower "vehicle injury discount rating" than a 00 323i? Shouldn't the 02 be a bit safer given four years of subtle "improvements"? Am I missing something here? I'm still confused.....

Which is More Fun To Drive?

Like the devils advocate, my 528 was a fine car and pretty peppy. But, the 330ci is like a bullet when compared to the 528. My point is, the 330ci sort of brings out the juices which demands rigorous driving. How Come? The torque, HP, the better transmission and I suppose the new engine is far more efficient which creates faster driving. Just guessing Alan. You do have a point, but is hard to beat the underwritwers decisions whether they be right or wrong.

I would agree this is likely the culprit. I would guess that to an insurance company a 325 is a 325. They probably look back through their entire claim history and make the evaluation on that.

As for trusting an insurance company, not a chance...

Because there is no rhyme or reason to why insurance companies charge what they charge, as compared to their competitors, you would probably be better off shopping around and finding an insurance company that charges less.
