I just learned the hard way that the iPod adapter cannot be installed in my wife's new 2005 X5 3.0i, because it has "Premium Sound" (also won't work with Sirius, CD Changer, Nav). The hard waay means it was purchased with the vehicle-- we learned after the fact that this could not be done.
X3man noted in the X3 forum in January that he had information from BMW Munich that a new iPod adapter was forthcoming in Summer 2005. Can't get a response from X3man to email.

Does anyone know of any updated adapter coming down the pike-- I really don't want to get the Auxiliary audio adapter install just to find out months later that I could 'iPod my BMW' with the real thing. How about any other solution to using the BMW adapter with a Premium sound system? (leased car so 3rd party solutions are out).

As an aside, it is really amazing that this much heralded and advertised accessory can only be installed on bare bones vehicles, if you have virtually any electronics option you cannot "iPod your BMW". Bad PR from both BMW and Apple.

Haven't heard announcements about a new IPod adaptor from BMW, but I would go with the Dension Icelink Plus. You will need an installer other than the dealer most likely (I did it myself, instructions are posted on X5 world), price is about the same as the BMW kit. The IceLink works with all combinations of Nav, premium sound, etc, with the right kit. Two significant advantages with the IceLink: First, you can get artist/song title displayed on the head unit/computer/Nav display, with a free file download, and second, you can toggle between the IceLink interface (using steering wheel controls, track +/-, fast forward, 5 playlists) and the original IPod interface (which is better for finding a single track on an IPod). I don't use the IPod interface much, as I don't like squinting at the IPod screen while driving, but it can be handy. Densionusa.com.

I use the IceLink Plus in my X5, and would buy another.

IMO the iPodyourBMW interface is an embarrasing joke. The main problem is that you cannot view the song/album tags on your X5, and it also disables the iPod interface. In other words, if you want to find a song on your iPod - forget-about-it!

Get the aux or Icelink.
