I was just wondering...if you could afford it, do you think an M3 would be worth $60,000 MSRP, or is the established MSRP pushing it?

At that point I'd be looking at a low mileage 911 C2.

MSRP is $45,900
Maybe he's talking future iterations????

Hell, at $45,900 by the time you get out with Premium, SMG, TT&L, Gas Guzzler, you're almost there.

MSRP for most luxury cars is not close to what you're actually going to pay for it. MSRP on the M3 is in the mid $45.9k. Add in the $1k gas guzzler and the $645 delivery and you're already up to $47.5k. The one that you want is going to have some options, like leather seats ($1,100), xenon lamps ($700), metallic paint ($475) and you're already at $49,820. How about power seats ($1,200)? Or a moonroof ($1,050)? The total is $52,070. Well, at that point, you can save a few bucks by getting the Premium Package ($3,200, savings of $150), which comes with the rain sensing wipers. So your total now is $51,920. At a roughly 6% FL sales tax, that's a total of $3,115 on top of that for a total of about $55k. That's what I consider to be a reasonable estimate of the cost of an M3.

Now, people may want it with more options, including the cold weather package ($700), navigation sytem ($1,800), and SMG ($2,400), which easily puts it at $60k. Now if you want all this in a M3 cabrio, you're looking at $60,600 + $3,600 tax -- a very expensive 3-series.

I believe that Acura is the only luxury brand where the MSRP for a car is fairly close to what you'll expect to pay, because the trimlevels are fairly well defined and things don't really come as individual options.

Well I for one do not regret my decision to plop down all that money to get my car. I have never been this happy with a car (well, except for my old E36 M3). Worth every penny, IMHO.

Sounds like a lot! What would be better on these higher performing cars, where I assume wear is more of an issue. Lease or Own. i currently own my '01 330ci

But I would want to get these options when i get my '04 M3.
Custom color, SMG, Mcloth leather seats, Xenons. think I can get it for $50k-$55k otd?

As of now, an M3 with those options would cost you $52,600 before taxes & fees

I'd pick up a used Porsche 996 for that much. The M3 is an amazing car, but for 60K there's a few others that I'd rather have.
