Is HUD really an asset or mostly gimmicky?

Hello All,
I have a few questions in regards to HUD, as we are looking to purchase a newer 5 series. So I am considering whether it is an option worthy of consideration such as heated seats, which is a must for my wife and daughters.

1. Is HUD really any use with a daily driver because this is what the BMW will be used for? I can see where HUD could be useful with navigation while traveling but we reserve our Escalade for trips. So do you find HUD necessary or unnecessary with your daily driver?

2. Do you consider HUD more of a nuisance? My daughter and I found it kinda neat in the vehicles we test drove but my wife found it distracting.

3. Are the BMW HUD units highly reliable or do they suffer from issues on occasion? I just read quite a number of people complaining about having issues with their HUD units. So is it just something else that's prone to fail and will need servicing/replacement at some point?

Thanks,
Ralph

Two thoughts for the OP on the cracked windshield topic. First, it appears that there are only two windshield options for the 5 series and they are both a little over $1000. The second is how likely is a cracked windshield in the first place. I've had one cracked windshield on a car, and that was the one I noted earlier. Every SUV or Pickup I've owned has had a cracked windshield at some point. Unscientific for certain, but I have to wonder if the angel of the windshield has something to do with that.
We have it on our 2020 X3 and 2022 Z4. We think it is fantastic, especially with the navigation. You really see the navigation maps and upcoming directions without looking down. Also like it when selecting our preset radio channels. The list is shown on the HUD and you can navigate to what you want, again without taking your eyes off the road. I did adjust the brightness to our likeness. Never had any trouble with the HUD.
You are spot on regarding your comments. I own a 2018 530i a love it 100% Thx
I love my HUD and have had no problems with it. However, I have had problems dealing with insurance companies when replacing a busted windshield. One company, USAA, claimed I did not have it and therefore would not pay for it although I sent them a picture of it from the front of the windshield as well as from the driver's seat and a copy of my window sticker that listed it as one of the options I purchased. I have since changed insurance companies.
You know something, I’m starting to wonder about USAA, I’ve had them for my car insurance for over 40 years but lately….

(1) your experience
(2) when an igidit hit me while running a red light, then claimed I was the one who ran the red. USAA was quick to state “Well , Mr —-, we have to accept liability since it was your fault” … thanks for believing the igidit over me without even talking to me, and who is this “we” crap as you increase costs somewhere on my side? Cops were no help, their main interest was in being done with it … reminded of that scene in the Big Lebowski movie when he is recovering his stolen junker at the impound lot and asks if they have any clues in the investigation (ROFL).
(3) they have outsourced their glass coverage to Safelight. Like totally, when I called with a windshield issue the call was routed to Safelight by the robot (god I hate talking to a computer) before I talked to a human. I guess Safelight did an acceptable job on my beater Corolla (and don’t really care), but I would not want to deal with them for my bimmer.
(4) I used to have USAA mutual funds but they sold that whole LOB to Schwab. Schwab is ok, and I’m average happy with them … anyone can go there anytime.
(5) so many dang USAA commercials on TV now … and they seem to be saying to join you only need to be the second niece of someone who thought about serving.

I used to feel good that I was undoubtedly getting a special deal as part of low overhead / profit outfit of morally / fiscally above average members but lately I’ve been singing “I’ve lost that loving feeling” and might have to shop my business. Got to say, however, that all the people I talk to there (after getting through the dang computer) are still super nice and professional, so not their fault.

UPDATE: sorry for the long post of questionable relevance. Thanks for letting me vent … I feel better already.
Two things I'd leave to dedicated shops vs the dealer - wheel alignment and glass. Safelite are plenty good, in my experience. They know what they are doing, and have all the needed equipment. I don't think a BMW (or any other brand) dealer is better at replacing a windshield than Safelite or any decent body shop is. Many dealers actually outsorce this.

The problem is not Safelite, but the windshield that the insurance company makes them work with.
Insurers will always proceed with and push for 3rd party glass (which could be good or not so good), and will only go to name brand (BMW original in this case) if you agree to pay extra, OR if the 3rd party does not cary that specific model windshield.

The good part is that most exotic windshields will not be carried by the 3rd party and the insurer will be forced to go for original. And if it's at least half-good - they'll treat it as their own 3rd party. This happened to me with my econosuv - turned out that my windshield was exotic enough. They covered it in full.

Initially, when they thought that they had a 3rd party for my car, they were quoting me $250 (or was it $300) extra if I wanted to go with an original from the dealer (which is still less than the actual difference in price I think, looked like a flat fee).
I haven’t had to make a windshield claim, but it is why I have Liberty Mutual.

BMW dealership and OEM parts are part of the coverage.

I did use it for hail damage. Dropped it off at the BMW CCC and let them deal with it.

You’ve summarized USAA very well (member since 76). It’s been downhill since around 98-99.
They never should have had an investment division. My only regret was waiting for them to sell out to Schwab rather than switching years earlier.

We have HUD on our 2020 X3 M40i. I thought it was a “nice” add on until driving back home from a long trip. We were going through some mountains and valleys with intermittent heavy fog. Needless to say my eyes were glued to the road when we hit the fog aress, and the HUD kept me from having to look elsewhere for info.

Have it in both my M4 and GLE and it's a must for me.
I have a 2011 535 that I've had since new. HUD's in that car and I'm sure others are amazing. Yes, there's a polarized visibility issue but still awesome. However, also driving a 2022 GMC Sierra and with the instrument panel ability to choose multiple settings for content and or screens for the instrument panel, it's not the must have it once was.
We've got 2 BMW products here: a very recent MINI Cooper S with a HUD and a '22 230i, without the HUD…

…but with Live Cockpit (iDrive 7).

Mu opinion: if the HUD is a part of a package already with other options you think you'd want, I'd say go for it. I'm not sure if BMW even offers the HUD separate from Live Cockpit now with iDrive 8/8.5 and iDrive 9 coming…but for any cars that have iDrive 7 still and Live Cockpit but NOT the HUD, I'd say you can skip the HUD as an add-on if available. For me, a HUD is not necessarily a game-changer.

Live Cockpit is so good and I've moved over from Apple Maps in CarPlay to use the built-in sat/nav…and it's been terrific. Since iDrive 7 isn't getting Apple Maps turn-by-turn in the Live Cockpit/instrument panel with the live map view/current location, am sticking with the built-in navigation for that. At least for me, it's peripheral vision that makes Live Cockpit & the instrument panel work like a HUD. Not the same, no, but I drive the MINI plenty & I do love its HUD…but don't find myself missing it when behind the wheel of the 230i.

So worth it if already included now in a package; not so much without package inclusion (IMO).
I have a 2006 650i either the HUD and moving headlights. I wouldn't give up either one. I find the HUD allows me to keep my eyes on the road instead of in the car. My wife has a 2018 X3 which displays directions within view but you still have to loom away from the road. My HUD is so much better. However, I do wish I could update my Nav with newer maps. Last update was 2012. No, I don't want a new Nav system. I also enjoy my moving headlights since I live in a large community with windy roads with minimum lighting. I mean almost none. Bright lights that follow the road are awesome and making that drive late at night you would wish you had them too.
Thanks for all of the replies!

We've decided that HUD would be a preferred feature, so we are looking for something with that as well as our other desired features. My wife's favorite color scheme is Bluestone with the black SynsaTek interior. She does not like the black Dakota leather with the silver contrast stitching. So, that really limits what is available to us. She does like the blue stitching though as with m-sport packages. Anyhow, I have only located one vehicle that met our criteria, with one exception, out of the hundreds that I have viewed over the last weeks. It was a 2018 540xi m-sport with low mileage that was within our price range. That car was perfect with the exception it was a 2018 and I desire a 2019 with some remaining warranty. That car unfortunately sold today as I was awaiting them to send additional pics and a video. So, the quest continues.

God Bless,
Ralph

When you buy a used car you can't wait "forever" for your dream car, right? Just saying... The blue stitched leather is Dakota, it was one Dakota choice available with MSport. I doubt you would find many with that interior. For 2018 through 2020, you could order Multi-Contour seats with Dakota leather. If you seek multi-contours specifically, the blue-stitched Dakota interior (code LCNL) was not available with multi-contours (or Luxury Seating package ZLS).

Yes, I fully understand what you are saying. However, we are confident that the right car will come up soon and not necessarily an m-sport type. I spent many weeks looking for our last BMW all the while telling my wife that the car didn't exist. One finally popped up 700 miles away in Coral Springs. We still have that 530xi which now has 255,000 miles on it. Anyhow, hopefully something will come up soon that is within our price range.

Good choice on the color, that Bluestone is looks great IMHO.

I hear you. I spent over 6 months looking for my pre-owned 340i. I had a list of must haves and nice to haves.
I just bought me third car in a row with a HUD. I wouldn't buy one without a HUD.
HUD is distracting and a waste of money. I turned mine off prior to leaving the dealership. I wish they get rid of it and install better seats.

Since HUD is optional and so are the “better seats”. Why didn’t you skip the HUD and opt for the seats instead?
