With the car warmed up and running, I can push on the accelerator about 1/2" and the engine speed changes very, very little.

I have also noticed when starting off in first gear, there is a sudden increase of power at ~3,500 RPM. (BTW, manual transmission)

Is this normal for a 2001 530 due to drive by wire?

-Thanks,
Frank

Sounds like the potentiometer (i think that's the name) for the pedal assembly is failing. I am not certain if the DBW 6's have a throttle position sensor, if so that could also be a possible culprit.

The 6's that year have drive by wire-so it may be the pedal or it may be the throttle body-somebody here was trying to sell a throttle body for the 30 engine just the other day for 100 bucks -new and in the box.

Reset your Transmission

Try this cheap option first. There are a number of threads that describe the process.

I also remember reading about a BMW software fix to this problem.

Good Luck.

Ok, what is the cheap option?

[edit] I think I found it. Did you mean "Throttle Adaptation Procedure?"
