Is this profitable?

I was cruising autotrader and found this kind of ad:

"I have for sale a new 2002 BMW M3 Allocation, in fully "BUILDABLE" status. That means you can choose what options and colors you'd like on your M3. For $1900, you can purchase this June Build allocation for the MSRP! Simply go to BMWUSA.com and "Build Your M3" and that is how much your M3 will be upon delivery to you. (4 weeks after the build date.) All my M3's are located at 5-Star "MSRP ONLY" BMW dealerships. Once I recieve your $1900, then I will call the dealership, they will refund my deposit holding the slot, and then they will call you to get your order and deposit on the car. Call me with specific questions. I've done this over 50 times now, and am honest and efficient."

So, basically a dealer is letting someone have a slot and the guy is making $1900 a pop?

yup! and he will end up buying his for free.
I did not realize that allocation slots were transferrable. I guess it is a contract between the dealer and the buyer is, right? A long time ago, I remember Jon would not allow someone in a waiting list to sell his/her slot.

When I put a deposit down for a Mini S, I did not read anywhere in the piece of paper that stated I could transfer my slot to someone else. I guess this is a deal stuck between this guy and a dealership.

must depend upon the dealership. I'm guessing like dealer markup BMWNA does not govern these types of things. Ya never know, he may pay the sales associate half to do this

When you put down your deposit on the Mini, did it say anywhere that you couldn't transfer your slot? At my dealer they used a BMW order sheet (last June) and it said nothing about transfering slots. A few months ago, I was talking to the GSM about transfering my slot. He indicated that it wouldn't be a problem.

It was actually a BMW dealer preference order form. There is nowhere that says I cannot transfer. However there is no indication of where I am in the wait list. I asked about this and they basically said they will call once my slot arrives.

That sucks. I was told where I was on the list, it was written down, it's been in several emails and I was offered a June production slot (which matched where I was on the list). I hope that you at least got a commitment on the price. They promised that they weren't going to gouge and put that in writing as well, "Price not to exceed MSRP"

Actually, I cancelled the order and got back the deposit. Although the dealership has a good reputation, I was not willing to let them use my money for a whole year. Also, I wasn't so sure about the Cooper S, anyway. Good luck with yours :bigpimp:

My thoughts are what a bunch on maroons these people are.

Especially now where MSRP for the M3 is the norm.

I don't blame this guy for scalping as much as I blame the idiots that are letting him do it at their expense.

Even if I had that kind of discretionary income available to me to be that indiscriminate I wouldn't do it. It's against my principles. I'll NEVER pay over MSRP. I blacklist any dealer or individual that engages in these business practices. That's just me.

50 times? Too funny. Only in America!

I agree with you Mike

I agree 100% with everything Mike just said.

That's even worse than the guys that have some kind of inside connection, get their hands on something like the very first couple of high demand cars (like when the M5 first came out)at MSRP, drive them a couple of weeks and sell them to Symbolic Motors for a profit.

What kind of dealership would allow this? Maybe he's spreading it around and hitting all the dealers in his area.
