Came across this story today. I don't own one and probably never will, but I can't believe that BMW would pull a dirty trick like this. The reviewer says that the M3 CS comes fitted with a black box that records speed, shift points, engine revs. etc. so they'll void your warranty if the car is tracked or raced.

Say it ain't so.

That's the same group of morons that published an article about how manual transmissions are the most dangerous things on the road today, and that they should be banned.

I don't think that's true. But even if it is, how can BMW prove that you tracked or raced the car?
I think the alternate version of what the author says is that the car has onboard diagnostics, just like every other car on the market has -- since it's required by law. But he gives OBD more credit than it deserves.

So I agree that BMW is unlikely to know or be able to prove that you raced the car.

And there's a difference between "racing" and "tracking."

Edit: The official Service and Warranty Information Book for 2004 3 series says, in part:

"This warranty shall be null and void if ......... or if the car has been used in any competitive event."

Word to the wise: Avoid concours d'elegance, scavenger hunts, audio sound-offs, and racing.

Excessive wear as per mileage and ECU readings alone will show signs of tracking..Your best bet is to feel out your service tech and/or advisor..I spent quite a bit of time trying to feel out my service rep, cautious about what I said about the few mods that I did to the car..But later on after a long discussion, having him tell me to never worry about it, and to make sure that I always talk to him..Of course, I would own up to my own doings....But then again, I have yet to enter any events with the car...just non-competitive track time on a less than entertaining track..

Here's the grip on reality that you'll find on that site.
That is absolutely hilarious...Great stuff..so by removing the left peddle, drivers can better concentrate on their conversation over the cell phone in their left hand, and can disregard anything around them...I always thought that all drivers should be trained to drive in a manual, before jumping into a less predictable automatic...Off topic...Sorry

Well gee then I guess all those owners that track and race their cars in the BMW CCA events have had their warranties voided by BMW.... :tsk:

There are so many ways to shoot holes in this story I dont know where to begin...

I guess I just did with the CCA thing... :dunno:

BMW ECU records MAX RPM, elapsed time above a certain RPM and max speed. That's it.
