Sorry for the late post, but I have been busy with work and traveling. Since this is my second Euro Delivery, I'll avoid all of the minutia especially since most of us on this board have been reading about other's ED's for some time now.

My last ED was in 2006 at the old Freiman location. While the Welt was completed, they had yet to offer deliveries, so it was quite exciting to experience the new facilities along with a factory tour. While I had reserved a tour of the Munich factory in 2006, I unfortunately had the time wrong and arrived 30 mins late for the tour and was promptly turned away (gotta love German efficiency).

Since I wanted an early August delivery to work around my frequent business travel schedule, I decided on a 2012 328i since the MY13's weren't available until later in the month. I also decided to tack on the Performance Center Delivery in South Carolina along with my ED experience, since I had yet to visit the facilities in the States. Given that I also have had several X5's, I was anxious to see the factory for myself. With my date of 8/9/12 reserved, I made my travel arrangements.

Needless to say, the Welt experience was wonderful. I had a 9:30am delivery time so that I wouldn't have to rush to make my 11:30am factory tour. Arrived at the Welt at 8:00am and was promptly checked in and escorted to the 3rd floor lounge. Tom was my delivery specialist, and he couldn't have been more helpful with just the right amount of information given that I've had BMW's since the 1980's and was quite fluent in the technology and overall BMW experience. Since it was a Thursday, I was the only American taking delivery that day, and had the facility to myself (there were only 2 other local deliveries, so the lounge and delivery area were very quiet).

Made sure to sign Das Buch, have my key chain engraved, and purchased my safety vests for travel into Austria. The delivery was perfect, and I was through by 10:30am giving me plenty of time to explore, have quick lunch in the lounge and have the car valet parked by the Welt staff before taking the factory tour. All in all, a great experience that I can't wait to do again in a few years.

As for the trip details, I spent 4 days in and around Munich, 2 days in Berchtesgaden, Salzburg, and Mondsee, and one day in Heidelberg and Frankfurt. The weather was absolutely perfect for the entire week with temps in the low 70's and sunny. Given the rather cool and damp summer in Germany, I was very lucky with the weather. Dropped the car off in Frankfurt and flew home from there.

I was recently notified that my car in on the Integrity with arrival date of 9/14/12 into Brunswick, GA. Hoping that US Customs doesn't take too long, as I'm shooting for an early October re-delivery at the Performance Center. Now, I just have to keep away from my computer and tracking the ship, and seeing her move ever so slowly across the Atlantic.

Couple of random items related to the trip:
  • I made sure to secure a chipped debit card before leaving the States. Got one from Travelex in Atlanta airport and loaded several hundred Euro. After having experienced issues at gas stations, UBahn/SBahn stations, and some restaurants on a previous trip, I didn't want to have any issues with my non-chipped US credit cards. Needless to say, I didn't have any issues this trip other than trying to decode my limited German while reading the credit card screens.
  • The Autobahn is getting more crowded and has more construction zones than I ever remembered. While I was able to get up to 135mph on certain stretches, most of the time, we were barely over 60 mph or less through the various construction zones. Even with the construction, I am still amazed at the level of driver awareness in quickly changing lanes while passing in the left lane. This is one of my pet peeves in driving throughout the US with "Ma and Pa" lingering in the left lane at or under the speed limit seemingly oblivious to the mile long line of cars behind them.
  • I will never complain again about gas prices in the States. Even though I averaged 30 mpg, having to pay $120+ for a fill up was painful.
  • I also forget how little space there is on most European streets and parking garages. I can't imagine trying to park my X5 in some of those tiny spaces. It was difficult enough with the 328i even with the folding mirrors and park distance.
  • The car performed flawlessly. I was worried about going down to a 4 cylinder, but the turbos made the difference and I never wanted for more power even when passing on the Autobahn. Didn't like the Auto Start/Stop system at all, and will definitely be having my dealer apply the recode upon redelivery. While the technology sounds great, I couldn't get used to the A/C trickling out when engine stopped. Can't imagine what it would be like on a hot day.

We've been to Berchtesgaden probably twenty times in too many years, but your pictures made me realize that we've never been there in the Summer. It's even more beautiful without 8 foot high piles of snow. Great photos and very pretty car.

I got lazy after attaching so many pics. I labeled most of them or provided them in logical groupings, but I guess I should have taken more time for all of the obsessive compulsive members of these forums (I'm counting myself as one) :D
