I owned a 2002 1.8t. Great car, but once I upgraded it, it wasn't reliable anymore. I had a 3071r turbo, built motor, etc... dropped about 20k in upgrades, and it ran 12's in the quarter mile and put down over 350whp.

Change the timing belt every 60k, run full synthetic oil and change it often they have sludge issues.

what was happening after all this upgrades that reliability went down??? too much HP?

i hope that guy changed the timing belt at 60k so i still have around 20k more miles before i have to change it...i looked at it while i had the valve cover off and looked ok..which engine oil did you use in yours since i have to change the oil in couple of days...btw car has CVT tranny which feels funny when you drive it...you can't even feel the tranny shift...

its nice from outside,interior is not so perfect...scratches,and headliner coming off in the back but thats easy fix...but stepdaughter loves it

If its a CVT don't even chip it. Those transmissions are notoriously weak, they don't even hold up to the added torque of a chip sometimes.

As for the reliability issues on my car they were a result of the added power. I sold the car at 58k miles and was on my 3rd or 4th transmission(manual transmissions), bent all of my connecting rods(the weak link if you want to go above 300whp.) Keep in mind 350awhp equals about 455 hp, and the car came with 170hp. It just was never meant to have that kind of power, but I drove it like I stole it everyday.

If you ever have any questions I literally know everything there is to know about that car.

no this one is for a 19yo step daughter...i want a 1.8t,quattro,manual and that one i will buy stage 3 apr kit..exhaust,3" downpipe,exhaust etc etc...
the one im picking up tommorow that one is for mom....
that some impressive numbers....
btw there is a guy here selling 00 a4,quattro,1.8t,manual with,upgrades,around 450 hp,rims,14.5" front brakes for 8k cash maybe ill pick it up too

no my friend i wish i had money but story is different..i started with a 600 dollar beat up suburban..fixed it...customized it a little and sold it for 2500 cash...bought a 02 e39 for 5000 cash with tranny failsafe..fixed it and sold it for 9500 cash...with that money i bought the e65....
i only buy bmw and benzes now and audis with problems,interior problems,electrical problems..fix them...clean them..make them like new maybe do a little customizing..and sell them on craigslist
but i make sure car is in condition that i would let my mom drive it...mechanically and cosmetically must be 100%...the 02 e39 had 190k+ miles i changed all the gaskets,fixed tranny,cleaned it so good that when guy showed up and saw the car he didn't even test drive it but bought it on spot....talked to him while back and him and his family love the car...i either sell or trade title for title
i got to tell you craigslist is the best thing on the web...with little surfing you can find very nice european cars for 2k dollars and up
i get bored with driving the same car..always looking for new project to fix

thanks...i didn't want to sell it but had to so i could buy 2002 745i that we have now...e39 are good handling machines but 7 series is 7 series....that was my goal to get a clean 7 series
its like night and day....i love the flagship....powerful yet comfortable and way ahead of its time...
