I read through the tech question and answer and cought something interesting. One person wrote about changing the oil himself between the 15,000 mile dealer serivces and so on..... The tech wrote that when changing the oil yourself, you should use the same exact brand that the dealership uses which would be a Castrol brand. He stated that using any high quality synthetic oil is fine but it's the CONSISTANCY in using the same brand that matters. That said, I guess I will be buying oil from my dealership instead of using getting Mobil 1 as I had planned. Any comments on this? :)

Sure, you should stick with the same brand, but it doesn't mean you can't supply the BMW mechanics a case of oil for your oil change. A case of Mobil 1 is only about $25.

I changed my oil last week at 1500 miles. I'll be changing it again each 7500 miles and giving a case of Mobil 1 to my dealer on those 15,000 mile service visits.

Castrol Syntec is crap and it won't be near my car again.

BTW, the editors of Bimmer are big Redline Motor Oil fans....

Hi Gary. How do you know they actually put the oil you bought in your car? I mean, no one really knows what they do to anything on the car but I just find it odd to bring them oil. I don't know...... maybe I should get over my shyness.

I don't know

They save money by using customer supplied oil. Since service is covered under the car purchase, I'm probably saving them about $25 per visit. So yeah, bring in your own oil.

Also, you can often buy your parts at a discount and bring them in for installation. I've had the service department tell me I need part X, I'll get the part number from the parts department, and then order it from PacificBMW at half the price.
