Lane Change Assist?

I’ve had my 540 a little over a month and I’m loving it so far.

However, I’ve yet to figure out how/if the lane change assist works.

I have both driver assistance packages, and when I turn on the active driver assist (steering wheel button) and hold down the directional, I get mixed results. On occasion it seems that it has changed lanes actively. Other times, it just seems to turn off the system (green lines disappear). How exactly is this supposed to work?

And, while we’re at it, what’s the deal with traffic jam assist?

And before the usual “read the manual” crowd chimes in, I’ve done that. It is still not clear.

Thanks.

Active Lane Change Assist didn***8217;t make it to the G30. Not yet anyway. What you may be talking about is the blind spot detection and warning if you try to change lanes without the signal or of there is a car there.

Not sure what your question about TJA is but it works well. I use it daily.

I find that the lane assist is somewhat problematic. Sometimes it keeps me perfectly centered in the lane; other times it will actually cross the white lines before swinging back toward the opposite side (I have been testing it and sometimes have done so on a road with implanted reflectors so I can tell if it touches or crosses the reflectors). I have been using it as a lane warning more than a lane assist as I don't trust it although I know that the sensors in the car will stop that from happening if there is a car next to me.

I have also noticed that there is a tendency to follow an exit lane. Not hard to override but still......

The green lines turn into grey lines when there is not a double line in the road. It is then telling you that it can't read the lines. When it sees lines on both sides, the lines turn green.

I still love the ACC (after having it coded to default to the closest setting) and my guess is that the other safety features will work as well. They definitely need better software on the lane assistant.

I did notice this morning the blind spot monitor went off when there wasn't a car in the blind spot, but one was charging up pretty fast. Maybe that happened by accident. Sometimes it hasn't gone off when there actually is a car there. But I've adjust my mirrors wide open anyway so I'm not reliant on it. I don't quite trust it, yet

While I don't trust the lane assistant, I do trust the blind spot alert. It has not failed me in almost 3 years. However, as a former President has said..."Trust but verify". So like you, I have my mirrors set wide and I also always turn and look as well.

Yep - it's another regional variation. I'm in the uk and have Driver Assistance Plus II and my active lane change works fine.
Hello Stevelup, can you please share your CAFD files with me? I am trying to find a way to code the Active Change Lane assist, which you have in the UK but we don't in the rest of EU and US.

I would really appreciate your help here! Thanks!

That's good, Stevelup. That give us less fortunate under the BMWNA umbrella hope that this can be coded.

My experience is that below 43 mph following a car ahead works quite decently. However it's only useful if the car ahead is doing what you would do. A lot of people can't center their cars in the lane, so I don't want to follow them and look dumb too.

Above 43 mph it only follows lane marks. That implementation is pretty crappy, compared to other brands, especially Tesla. If the marks are really well painted and the camera can see far ahead, it usually works ok-ish. If the car can't see much ahead, it starts veering from one side to another and disconnects all the time, showing a yellow big steering wheel in the HUD. In summary, BMW is light years behind Tesla in this feature.

Traffic Jam Assist is the system that works at speeds below 43mph. It doesn't necessarily require lane markings to work as long as you have a car in front to follow. I used it quite a bit in the city where there are cars parked at random places requiring you to move on to the opposite side. Car has absolutely no problem in following another car in front of you. Only problem is that if you follow the wrong car, you could look like an idiot [emoji6]

Lane change Assist works in the UK as someone else has said before. So that's clearly a regional issue for you guys. However those who are experiencing the cars straying out of lane should get the Driving Assistant Plus re-calibrated. I've got no problem with it and works just like what I've driven in a Tesla.

Has anyone played with the setting under Intelligent Safety in iDrive where lane departure warning can be set to "always" and "steering intervention" turned on? Does anyone know what the difference is between that, and if you turn on the steering/lane assist with the button on the steering wheel? When lane departure warning is set to always and steering intervention is turned on in the Intelligent Safety menu it seems like the steering/lane assist is always on, it just doesn't warn you to keep your hands on the wheel like when you turn it on with the button on the steering wheel.

What's the difference between that setting in iDrive, and turning it on with the button on the steering wheel?

Lane departure warning in iDrive vibrates the wheel and steers back to the lane it thinks you're in. If you just rely on that, you will bounce between the left and right lane markers, or repeatedly bounce off one or the other lane markers, depending on the road.

Lane keep assist (the button on the steering wheel) tries to keep you in the lane without ever invoking lane departure warning. If it's working right, you'll never feel the vibration in the steering wheel from LDW, and the car should stay in the middle of the lane. In my experience, this works most of the time, but you sure can't take a nap.
