it was a review which was illuminating. first off, they spent most of the review speaking to the need to always pay attention while driving the GT2; that while it's prodidiously fast monster, it has not inherent faults so much as it magnifies driver errors.

what is the reason for the GT2? because the 996 turbo is deemed too heavy and refined for purists. the weight difference: about 3350 pounds versus 3150 pounds.

the last paragraph of the article was the best, and something that we've been discussing ad nauseum on this board.

they concluded with this: that the GT2 is nice and dandy and no one in their right mind would mind one, but they would much rather have a club racer version of the normally aspirated 996 911 carrera in the US, too......one which weighs about 2800 pounds (current one is about 3100 pounds) with all of the go fast hardware that GT2 has.

hmmm. the more i read reviews such as this, i cannot help but KNOW bmw is coming soon with the lightweight M cars.

cheers, and good sunday, folks.

The GT2 is a magnificent car. It should be: $180K :yikes: - 65K more than the 911 Turbo. I'd never pay that much for a GT2 though. Granted, Porsche gave it even more power, but at the end of the day, it's a stripped out 911 Turbo (i.e. 911 Turbo without defense mechanisms and other gizmos). Should you really have to pay $65K more for that? :dunno:

Anyway, the GT2 rocks! :thumb:

BMW's up-coming Z5 coupe will weigh in the 2000 lbs range (I intepret that as in less than 3000 lbs) and with a 2.0 liter I-4 that outputs 240 HP NATURALLY ASPIRATED. Not saying that's anywhere near GT2 type performances but BMW is definately moving in the right direction technologically. This is definately going to bring back memories of The Great One, the E30 M3.

Now if they could ONLY put in the magnificent I-6 in the E46 M3 AND still manange to keep the weight below 3,000 lbs I'd pounce on that regardless of how "Banglefied" it looks.

Do you mind that it'll be SMG-only?

I dunno...After being in my friend's SMG E46 M3 for a few times, I still can't get over the fact that you don't have ABSOLUTE control over how it shifts, but the way his car shifts it's pretty incredible...It's certainly 1000X times better and quicker than I can shift and it's smoother, even at the quickest (S6) setting.

I'm at a cross roads here, I wish they would come out with a version where you can switch back to the manual shifting complete with the third pedal, and switch on SMG if you want the absolute best in shifting precision. I know I could NEVER carry off a 5-3 downshift nearly as smooth and quick as the SMG but I'd hate to NOT have that third pedal there for my personal enjoyment.

wonder why Porsche and MB don't have SMG.

a relatively small outfit such as ferrari (although they are FIAT) and BMW (another small company) have seen fit to develop roadgoing SMG.

but Pcars and MB's don't?

seems that SMGs since their mechanical origins are manual transmissions, would hold up better to hi HP engines than automatics w/ torque converters.
