Let's Talk Exhaust

Hi folks.

1995 BMW E36 318ic

So my exhaust corroded and needed to be replaced. I got it replaced for ~$500 (Canadian). But it's 3x as loud driving out of the shop as it was driving into the shop. I still have it installed, but it's obnoxious for this old elegant gal of a car. The exhaust completely changes the car. I'm not a Tokyo Drift kinda guy, and this car is a memoire of my Father. The shop guy said he could get an OEM unit, but it would cost $1800 and it would take quite some time to get one. He's good on his word, and this isn't about him or his shop.

I've been researching options, and it seems that there are no aftermarket parts that replace this unit. Is this the case? It's a 1.8 litre normally aspirated car. It's not a performance issue. I just want this car quiet.

I find it odd that this type of application is such a hassle. I am not a car parts kinda guy, and I'm assuming there has to be a library of exhaust options to deal with such a vehicle. But for some reason I'm wrong.

Can someone explain why this is the case? What are my options? Would a custom exhaust shop be able to help me?

Any insight appreciated. Cheers

Looks like he welded in a generic muffler. First I would hop under the car and make sure there is not a big exhaust leak. Run your hands around the joints with the car on but cold to fell for a leak. If it is just the muffler that is too free flowing you can get a stock replacement for $200 1995 BMW 318I 1.8L L4 Muffler | RockAuto . However be aware that you might be replacing it every few years. Every stock style aftermarket exhaust I have ever used rusted out within a couple of years and needed replacement again.

Oh wow. That's pretty incredible. I will definitely chase this up. I'll have a look at the exhaust this morning. Thank you. At $200, it's worth it.
