Does anyone here have experience buying outdoor covers for their car? My brother's E39 M5 will be spending the winter outside in Western New York. I want to look into buying a cover but I have read elsewhere that unlined covers can ruin the paint.

Questions I'm looking to answer:

- Are there different types of liners/what is preferable?
- Is a BMW product by best option or can I go with another brand?
- Should I even consider buying one used?

Noah Car Covers are supposed to be good, but expensive. I have the genuine BMW car cover for my M5 during winter time. I used it all last winter and it was fine, maybe some small fine scratches but that'll buff out. BavAuto has their own 'custom' car cover, I don't know much about it.

This is very helpful thank you. Can I ask where you got your genuine BMW cover? When I went to look on the BMW website their options did not go back to 1999.

Tischer BMW had them last year. Go to getbmwparts.com

Scroll to E39 section on the left hand side. Should see it populate E39 parts, and the car cover is in the middle of the page.

The genuine BMW covers are really not any better than a quality cover sold by Covercraft or the other companies that use quality materials like Noah or Evolution. Be sure to buy a cover that "breathes". This will ensure that any moisture trapped under the cover will evaporate. I have to park one of my cars outside and I have used a cover for years with no problems.

Don't buy into the 'BMW must know best' nonsense ...will the cover be going on and off all winter? THAT is where most of the paint damage will occur.
