I started looking for a Z4 for a weekend car. I'd like to get an 04-06 3.0i,MT but preferably the 3.0si. Any advice on what to look out for? Like what are the typical things that I should be aware of when purchasing a used Z4 in the 80-120K mile range. Unfortunately the three car's I've looked at from dealerships did not have maintenance records.

Typical issues I have encountered on my X3 coolant tank leak, CCV (burning oil)issues, valve cover gaskets leak? corroded ground straps (slow starts).

Any pointers would be great. Also How much better is the 3.0si over the 3.0i? an M would be out of my price range.

Just be aware that 04-05 3.0i and 06 3.0i are two different beasts. The 04/05 3.0i is top range car and has 225hp & 214 ft/lbs while the 06 3.0i has 215 hp and only 185 ft/lbs. The 06 3.0si is the way to go if at all possible with 255hp and 220ft/lbs. Personally I would go for an 05 3.0i over and 06 3.0i if the 3.0si is over budget.

^This^

The M54 3.0i performs much better than the N52 3.0i, and the 3.0si is closer to the S54 used in the M. The horsepower and torque curves for the N52 in the 3.0si pretty much equal the S54 until it runs out of gas around 5K rpm. The S54 gains most of its peak power difference in the range above 6K rpm.

Unfortunately the S54 is way out of my price range. So the way to go is the 06 3.0 is if at all possible but the 05 3.0i is no slouch. What about in terms of reliability. Is the 06 plagued with cooling, ccv and DISA issues? How would these compare to their boxer counterparts

Sticky steering in hot weather due to a tolerancing issue in the electronic power steering module is a common problem with Z4s older than mid '06, but there are several DIY fixes that seem to work. The M54 is a pretty reliable engine. Yes the DISA valve is a wear item, but that's easily addressd. The N52 used in the 3.0is is similarly reliable but some engines have a tendency for lifter tick if they're babied. Driving enthusiastically seems to make that a non issue.
Nothing in any of the Z4 engines scares me as much as the potential IMS bearing issues in the Boxsters.

Ha! I'm in Georgia too, and found my Zed in Minnesota. I travel quite a bit in my job so I was able to see the car before I bought it. That was 8 years ago and I still have the Zed. It was worth the two day drive to get her back home.

Be very careful about airbag lights on the dash...if they are displaying, insist on professional repair or walk away...
