I have a CPO '03 540i 6 speed with about 65k....the shift lever has a fair amount of play in it in all gears. It's not popping out, but I'm concerned that it is a sign of a future problem. My CPO warranty runs out in 6 months. When I asked the dealer service rep about it, he just blew it off- a little too quickly I thought. I've had other E39 std tranny:) - and don't recall the same condition.
Anybody have any thoughts on whether this is a problem.

It's due to worn shifter bushings. They can be a real pain to replace, because the real important ones require you disconnect the front of the driveshaft. They won't cause you any mechanical problems, but if the shifter gets really sloppy down the road it could cause missed shifts. Other than that, it's no real emergency, just annoying.

Thanks for the info Ryan. I guess BMW will not be interested in replacing these under the CPO warranty...but it seems like these bushings shouldn't have worn in only 65,000 miles
