After thinking swapping out my top end parts to refresh my M40B16 is too much hassle, I've decided to just put a new engine in. I do not want to spend A LOT of money and who wouldn't want a huge power gain to scream down the autobahn with. But I have to be realistic. Ive been looking at maybe doing an m42 swap, since its DOHC has a timing chain and a little more power. It also seems like it would be the easiest swap too. The bottom should be the same as my M40 so the tranny would work, I would just need the engine ecu and possibly the harness. I think it runs the 1.7 compared to my 1.3.

The other idea is to drop in a M20 which I know considerably less about the swap and whats involved. I can also get this motor cheaply but Im sure ill have to change a lot more. Can someone give me an idea of everything involved in either swaps and pros and cons for the m42 vs m20. keep in mind I have a 89 m40b16 so either one would be an improvement. Thanks
