Greetings! If this has already been solved by someone else, please disregard, but I couldn't find it so I had to figure it out myself. In the age of Spotify, IHeartRadio, Pandora, and Sirius, I still like to maintain my own USB library of music.

I previously had an 18 M550 with iDrive 6.0 and used an exported iTunes library complete with playlists for an in-car USB music library. 256GB with 70GB of music. It worked flawlessly. In each of the 7.0 cars I drove over the last two years, I tried to use my flash drive to listen to my library with no success. I was never able to hear more than a few songs. The rest never imported, no matter how long I waited.

I just received my 2021 M550 and again, no success on the drive. I tried the five drive swap trick, nothing. I reset the car (nothing). Never more than a few songs and no playlists at all. I even called Genius ... I'll stop there.

THE FIX
iDrive 6.0 will read an iTunes library with nested folders (..\music\artist\album\song). As long as they are formatted properly (ANSI - no UTF8), it will read playlists in a playlist folder off the root. iDrive 7.0 doesn't like that format. All playlists have to in the root of the USB - no subfolders. And the songs can only be one folder deep (actually two). Using my original iTunes library I removed the album folders and moved all of the songs under the artist (over 9000 tracks - I used a script). To modify the playlists, I imported the new library into iTunes (turn off music management) and double-click my old playlists. Using Notepad ++, I was able to quickly modify the playlists so that they matched the new library.

Everything, including Album Art, works perfectly. I hope this prevents someone from hours of searching to make the transition from 6.0 to 7.0 successful!!

Be Blessed!

Interesting. I have been trying to figure this out. What script did you use to move the tracks out of deeper folders and how can I do that?

Do a Google search for "batch moving all files in 100s of folders up one folder" - It is pretty simple from there. Good luck. If you need help, PM me.

I have a 2021 M550, so iDrive7. I copied several directories of music to a USB stick, and I organized them by artist/album. I also put a couple of .m3u playlists in the root directory. The car reads the music files just fine, and I can search by artist and album, etc. But it is not recognizing the playlists. I put them in the root, and I also tried putting them in a playlists directory. I also edited the path in the .m3u files to reflect exactly where the files are on the USB stick, e.g.

#EXTINF:276,One - U2
..\u2\Achtung Baby\03 One.m4a

Any advice on how to get it to recognize the playlists?

Could one you go through the step by step process for transferring songs from my IPOD or computer to a USB stick then to the hard drive on the car (I have a 2020 M550, and I don't know what version IDrive it is). I have no tech savviness whatsoever , have no clue what the above acronyms mean, and would be fine just playing off my IPOD. Unfortunately my car often does not read my IPOD even when connected by USB or C.
Thanks!

Well, I believe I have figured this out and I'm very pleased.

I used a program I have on my Mac called Playlist Export. It both exports the music from your library to the USB drive (and lets you change the folder structure, so it exported it so the files were just in a folder with the artist's name) and also exports the Playlists and fixes the path. So, now on USB with iDrive 7 I have all my music showing up, it sorts by artist, album, genre etc (that's all embedded in the files) AND the playlists work. PLUS, finally, the scroll wheel allows navigation AND the album art shows up in the HUD with the song title when you scroll, which is pretty cool.

I suspect this program does exactly what Dasmizdub did with scripts, but it was very easy.

Playlist Export is available in the Mac App store. I had it previously when I was having issues, but didn't realize until Dasmizdub's post that the issue was with the songs being more than one folder deep on the drive.

Thanks for pushing me to a solution, Dasmizdub!

In your example, remove the Album name. Place the 03 One.m4a directly in the u2 folder. Rinse and repeat.
